Q: What actually happens if I try to start the H3 with a key that hasn't been programmed?

The engine cranks and catches for a second, then dies. You'll probably try it two or three more times thinking it's a fluke. It's not. The immobilizer reads the transponder chip in the key during startup. If the chip isn't registered to that vehicle, the system cuts the engine off almost immediately. A mechanically correct key that isn't programmed behaves exactly this way. The truck isn't broken. It's doing exactly what it's supposed to do. Programming fixes it.

Q: Why does the dealer take so long and charge so much for a replacement key on an H3?

It's a process problem, not a technical one. The dealership routes the job through multiple departments. The service writer logs it, the parts department locates and orders the blank, and then the job waits in the scheduling queue. Q: I have one working key. Can I get a spare made without losing the key I already have?

Yes, and this is actually the easier version of the job. When at least one working key is present, we don't have to do an all-keys-lost procedure. We add the new key to the system alongside the existing one. Both keys work after. Doing this while you still have a working key is worth it because all-keys-lost jobs on the H3 take more time and are more involved. A spare now saves you a bigger headache later.

Q: My H3 cranks fine but stalls out right after starting. No obvious warning on the dash. Could this be a key or immobilizer issue?

That crank-and-stall pattern is one of the more recognizable signs of a transponder communication problem. It's not always a failed key. Sometimes it's a key that's been damaged, a transponder chip that's partially deregistered, or a worn key that's sitting at a bad angle in the ignition cylinder and not reading cleanly. Occasionally it's on the vehicle side. The way I sort it out is by testing with a known-good key or a verified programmer read of the chip.

2008 Hummer H3 Transponder Key Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional

Got a call from a guy in the Richland area of San Marcos. Parked his 2008 Hummer H3 in his driveway the night before, woke up and couldn't find the key anywhere. No spare. Truck wasn't going anywhere.

Does the 2008 Hummer H3 transponder key also have remote lock and unlock buttons?▼

Not on the ignition key itself. The H3 keeps those functions separate. The key that turns the ignition carries a transponder chip for the immobilizer, but the door lock remote is a standalone transmitter, not built into the key head. So you can have a working ignition key and a dead or missing remote and still start and drive the truck just fine.
