About Mazda Keys

Mazda key replacement overview in San Diego County

Four transponder chip generations sit across the Mazda lineup, from the late-1990s ID46 through today's encrypted ID70. The NC-generation Miata complicates things by running a Ford PATS 4D63 chip from the Mazda-Ford partnership era, which trips up shops that do not know the connection. We program all four chip families at the car, and we know the NC Miata curveball before we roll out.

Four Chip Generations, One Mobile Mazda Locksmith

Mazda

Think of the Mazda lineup as four chip eras stacked on top of each other. Era one starts around 1998 when transponder chips first appear on the 626, the early Mazda3, the Mazda6, and the CX-7, all running the ID46 platform across roughly a decade. Era two starts in 2012 when Skyactiv ushered in proximity push-to-start as standard on the CX-5, then rolled across the rest of the lineup through the mid-2010s. The job a locksmith does depends almost entirely on which era your particular Mazda lives in.

Mazda Where the NC Miata Breaks Pattern

Where the NC Miata Breaks Pattern

Era three lands in 2017, when Mazda shifted to the encrypted ID70 chip and made online authentication through Mazda's diagnostic system a hard requirement for programming. Era four is the odd one out: the NC-generation Miata from 2006 through 2015 runs a Ford PATS 4D63 chip from the Mazda-Ford partnership era and programs nothing like the rest of the lineup. Shops without that context try Mazda ID46 tools on it and get nowhere. Our van carries blanks and programmed fobs for all four eras, finishes OBD programming at the curb, and gets the car moving without a dealer appointment or a flatbed anywhere across San Diego County.

Mazda CX-5 Key Replacement

Mazda

The CX-5 is the single most-serviced Mazda we touch across San Diego County, and the key system has shifted three times in just over a decade. Phase one is the first-gen CX-5 from 2013 to 2016, running ID46 or ID47 chips with a standard proximity fob on push-to-start trims. The work needs OBD access plus a PIN pulled from the BCM, but it goes cleanly with the right tools and never needs a tow or a dealer routing. Phase two starts with the 2017 second-gen CX-5, which moved to the ID70 chip and the WAZSKE11D01 smart key platform. That generation requires online authentication through Mazda's diagnostic system, which our current tool subscriptions cover.

Mazda The CX-5 CR2025 Trap

The CX-5 CR2025 Trap

Phase three is the third-generation CX-5 launching with the 2026 model year, which keeps the ID70 architecture in place. Across both the second and third generation, every CX-5 fob runs a CR2025, not the CR2032 that owners default to grabbing at the auto parts store. The wrong cell either cracks the housing on installation or sits badly enough to kill the fob immediately. Get the right CR2025 the first time and skip the diagnostic visit.

Mazda Dealer vs. EZ Car Keyz

Mazda dealer vs EZ Car Keyz pricing comparison

Dealer Mazda fob pricing starts north of $200, and a smart key with programming runs $250 to $500 or more. The Mazdas that owners once programmed themselves through ignition cycles are now well past the 2013 cutoff, which means even those need dealer-grade equipment now. We finish every era of Mazda at the car for a fraction of dealer rates, with the right blanks and chips already on the truck, and no appointment booked for next week.

Mazda Key Problems We Fix

Sound familiar? We handle all of these -on site, same day.

Mazda CR2025 vs CR2032: The Most Common Mazda Battery Mistake
CR2025 vs CR2032: The Most Common Mazda Battery Mistake
The single most common Mazda fob mistake at the auto parts counter: grabbing a CR2032 when the fob actually wants a CR2025. The CR2025 is slightly thinner than the CR2032, and forcing the thicker cell into a CR2025-spec housing either cracks the case at the seam or creates a poor contact that kills the fob immediately after the swap. 2017-and-newer push-to-start Mazdas run CR2025. Earlier 2014 through 2016 fobs may run CR2032 instead. Always read the markings inside the battery compartment, or match the cell already in the fob, before buying. No reprogramming needed once the right battery goes in.
Mazda Keyless Failure After a Trip to the Body Shop
Keyless Failure After a Trip to the Body Shop
Mazda runs its proximity antennas through the door handles and the center console area, which puts them right in the path of nearly every collision repair and door swap. The pattern we see repeatedly: a Mazda comes back from a body shop in Kearny Mesa or El Cajon with a brand-new door panel and a fresh keyless malfunction warning that did not exist before. Eight times out of ten the cause is an antenna connector that did not get plugged back in during reassembly, not the fob or the key system at all. We diagnose that condition at the car before anyone orders parts.
Mazda Mazda Cranks but Will Not Start After Battery Disconnect
Mazda Cranks but Will Not Start After Battery Disconnect
On ID46 and ID47 era Mazdas (roughly 2004 through 2016), pulling the vehicle's 12-volt battery can occasionally throw the BCM into a state where it stops recognizing the key and demands a relearn. The classic symptom: the engine cranks fine, never catches, and the only dashboard hint is the standard security indicator. This is not a fob battery problem and a new fob will not fix it. The existing key has to be reprogrammed to the vehicle through OBD. We diagnose that condition at the car before recommending any parts purchase.
Mazda NC Miata at a Mazda-Only Shop: PATS Conflict
NC Miata at a Mazda-Only Shop: PATS Conflict
The 2006 through 2015 NC Miata is the most-misprogrammed Mazda in the country, and the reason is buried in history: it runs Ford's PATS transponder system with a 4D63 chip rather than anything from the Mazda parts shelf. A locksmith or shop that only carries Mazda ID46 tools will burn an hour trying to pair a fob to it before giving up. The signature failure mode is a clean crank with no fire and the security light lit on the cluster. Programming the NC Miata correctly requires Ford PATS-compatible equipment, not Mazda tooling, and that is exactly the tool we bring on NC calls.

Mazda Key Fob Battery Guide

Mazda How to Open

How to Open

Turn the fob over and find the small release tab or lever near the base. Press the tab and slide the back plate off, or work a coin into the seam to part the two halves carefully. The battery sits inside with the positive face oriented up. Snap the case back together firmly until the clips click into place.
CR2025
Mazda Battery Type

Battery Type

Most 2017-and-newer Mazda push-to-start fobs run a CR2025, which is the slightly-thinner cousin of the CR2032 that dominates the rest of the industry. Forcing a CR2032 into a CR2025 housing cracks the case at the seam or produces a contact gap that kills the fob immediately. Earlier 2014 through 2016 Mazdas may use a CR2032 instead, so the safe move is matching the cell already in the fob before buying. No reprogramming is needed after a correct battery swap. On 2014 through 2018 Mazda3 and CX-5 fobs, a plastic pry tool saves the case where a coin would crack it.

Pro Tip

Mazda pro tip

For 2014 through 2021 Mazda3 owners, there is a security issue that has nothing to do with your key but is still worth knowing. Researchers have disclosed six unpatched Mazda Connect infotainment vulnerabilities that allow code execution through a purpose-built malicious USB device plugged into the vehicle's USB port. The attack is not wireless; physical access is required. The practical implication is that anyone with unsupervised time around the car, a hotel valet downtown, a detailer in Mira Mesa, a parking attendant at the airport, could in theory exploit it. Mazda had not released a patch as of early 2026.

Mazda Relay Attack Protection for Mazda

Relay Attack Protection for Mazda

On the key side specifically, the 2024-and-newer Mazda CX-90 and CX-70 have begun adding Ultra-Wideband proximity verification, the same defense against relay attacks that Land Rover and Volvo deployed years earlier. If your Mazda predates the UWB rollout and runs standard keyless entry, the cheapest effective countermeasure is a Faraday pouch on the kitchen counter at night. They cost a few dollars and they shut down the relay attack vector entirely.

Mazda Owners on Our Service

⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

"Called on New Year's Day at 5 PM. Key worked on ignition and passenger door but not the driver door. He looked at the key more closely and said it could be a worn out key versus a door cylinder. Got the spare key and it worked. Saved me more than $100 compared to changing the door cylinder. Prompt, professional and fair pricing."

"EZ Car Keys is by far the best locksmith I've ever used. Marco is prompt, prices are reasonable, and he has the experience that leaves you comfortable. We've used him twice and will never use anyone else!"

Traci Thomas
⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

"Simply amazing. They honored their phone quote even though the job took much longer due to problems with my ignition cylinder. They disassembled, repaired, made two new keys and programmed key fobs - all for the original quote."
