About Mazda Keys

Four transponder chip generations sit across the Mazda lineup, from the late-1990s ID46 through today's encrypted ID70. The NC-generation Miata complicates things by running a Ford PATS 4D63 chip from the Mazda-Ford partnership era, which trips up shops that do not know the connection. We program all four chip families at the car, and we know the NC Miata curveball before we roll out.
Four Chip Generations, One Mobile Mazda Locksmith

Think of the Mazda lineup as four chip eras stacked on top of each other. Era one starts around 1998 when transponder chips first appear on the 626, the early Mazda3, the Mazda6, and the CX-7, all running the ID46 platform across roughly a decade. Era two starts in 2012 when Skyactiv ushered in proximity push-to-start as standard on the CX-5, then rolled across the rest of the lineup through the mid-2010s. The job a locksmith does depends almost entirely on which era your particular Mazda lives in.

Where the NC Miata Breaks Pattern
Era three lands in 2017, when Mazda shifted to the encrypted ID70 chip and made online authentication through Mazda's diagnostic system a hard requirement for programming. Era four is the odd one out: the NC-generation Miata from 2006 through 2015 runs a Ford PATS 4D63 chip from the Mazda-Ford partnership era and programs nothing like the rest of the lineup. Shops without that context try Mazda ID46 tools on it and get nowhere. Our van carries blanks and programmed fobs for all four eras, finishes OBD programming at the curb, and gets the car moving without a dealer appointment or a flatbed anywhere across San Diego County.
Mazda Dealer vs. EZ Car Keyz

Dealer Mazda fob pricing starts north of $200, and a smart key with programming runs $250 to $500 or more. The Mazdas that owners once programmed themselves through ignition cycles are now well past the 2013 cutoff, which means even those need dealer-grade equipment now. We finish every era of Mazda at the car for a fraction of dealer rates, with the right blanks and chips already on the truck, and no appointment booked for next week.

Mazda Key Fob Battery Guide

How to Open

Battery Type
Most 2017-and-newer Mazda push-to-start fobs run a CR2025, which is the slightly-thinner cousin of the CR2032 that dominates the rest of the industry. Forcing a CR2032 into a CR2025 housing cracks the case at the seam or produces a contact gap that kills the fob immediately. Earlier 2014 through 2016 Mazdas may use a CR2032 instead, so the safe move is matching the cell already in the fob before buying. No reprogramming is needed after a correct battery swap. On 2014 through 2018 Mazda3 and CX-5 fobs, a plastic pry tool saves the case where a coin would crack it.
Pro Tip

For 2014 through 2021 Mazda3 owners, there is a security issue that has nothing to do with your key but is still worth knowing. Researchers have disclosed six unpatched Mazda Connect infotainment vulnerabilities that allow code execution through a purpose-built malicious USB device plugged into the vehicle's USB port. The attack is not wireless; physical access is required. The practical implication is that anyone with unsupervised time around the car, a hotel valet downtown, a detailer in Mira Mesa, a parking attendant at the airport, could in theory exploit it. Mazda had not released a patch as of early 2026.

Relay Attack Protection for Mazda
On the key side specifically, the 2024-and-newer Mazda CX-90 and CX-70 have begun adding Ultra-Wideband proximity verification, the same defense against relay attacks that Land Rover and Volvo deployed years earlier. If your Mazda predates the UWB rollout and runs standard keyless entry, the cheapest effective countermeasure is a Faraday pouch on the kitchen counter at night. They cost a few dollars and they shut down the relay attack vector entirely.
Mazda Owners on Our Service
"Called on New Year's Day at 5 PM. Key worked on ignition and passenger door but not the driver door. He looked at the key more closely and said it could be a worn out key versus a door cylinder. Got the spare key and it worked. Saved me more than $100 compared to changing the door cylinder. Prompt, professional and fair pricing."
Gordon Harada"EZ Car Keys is by far the best locksmith I've ever used. Marco is prompt, prices are reasonable, and he has the experience that leaves you comfortable. We've used him twice and will never use anyone else!"
Traci Thomas"Simply amazing. They honored their phone quote even though the job took much longer due to problems with my ignition cylinder. They disassembled, repaired, made two new keys and programmed key fobs - all for the original quote."
