Miata Key Tech Across the NA and NB Generations
NA Era: Pure Mechanical
Plain metal blade, no chip, no battery, no electronics of any kind. Twist it, the car starts. That is it. Easiest Miata key to replace because there is nothing to register.
NB1 Era: ID33 Philips Transponder
Transponder key with an ID33 chip (Philips PCF7935) inside the head, paired to Mazda's NATS immobilizer. The key still looks simple, no buttons, no battery, but there is a chip embedded in the plastic that the car has to recognize before the engine fires. Pairing requires EEPROM access, which means professional tools.
NB2 Mid: Temic 8C Remote Head
Remote head key with three buttons, a Temic Crypto 8C transponder, and a CR2025 cell. Your key now locks, unlocks, and opens the trunk all in one unit. On-board programming is possible with the right diagnostic equipment and a PIN code.
NB2 Late: Texas 4D
Three-button remote head key with a Texas 4D transponder, a step up in security from the earlier NB models. Programming runs through the OBD-II port and requires advanced locksmith tools like the Autel IM608 or VVDI Key Tool Plus. Mazda of San Diego charges a premium; we handle these on-site for significantly less.
Identify Your Miata Key
Plain metal key with no chip and no remote. We cut to code and it works the moment we hand it over.
Looks like a regular key but has an ID33 chip hidden in the head. The car refuses to fire without a properly registered chip.
Three-button key with lock, unlock, and trunk. Temic Crypto 8C transponder inside, runs on a CR2025 cell.
Three-button remote head, looks similar to the 2001-2003 unit but packs a Texas 4D inside - sharper security, harder to clone.

Miata Key Problems We Solve in SD
Transponder Chip Failure
Key turns the ignition but the engine refuses to fire, or it cranks and dies. On 1998-2005 Miatas, the ID33, Temic 8C, or Texas 4D chip in the key head can fail from age and heat. We test the chip on-site and clone or replace if dead.
Remote Fob Battery Drain
The CR2025 in your 2001-2005 Miata remote head drains fast. When it dies, lock/unlock buttons quit, and people assume the whole key is broken. Drop in a fresh CR2025 first. Buttons still dead? The remote board may need reprogramming.
Immobilizer ECU Fault
Before recommending replacement, we pull codes from the NATS immobilizer module through OBD-II. On 1999-2005 Miatas, the immobilizer ECU can glitch and refuse a good key. Sometimes an EEPROM reflash or module reset clears it without a fresh key.
Door Cylinder Actuator Wear
Miata owners in Rancho Bernardo and Mira Mesa blame the remote when the real problem is a worn door cylinder actuator. Convertible top use stresses door wiring. Mechanical key still opens the door; power locks stop responding. Mechanical fix.
DIY a Miata Key? Reality Check
Nothing to program. A 1995-1997 NA Miata runs a plain mechanical key with zero electronics. Cut to code from your VIN, hand it over, you drive.
No DIY route here. The ID33 transponder requires EEPROM programming with professional diagnostic equipment. You need a locksmith or dealer for this one.
You can pair the remote buttons yourself using a door and ignition cycle procedure. The Temic 8C transponder still requires professional programming. So you can pair the lock and unlock buttons at home, but you cannot make the car start with a fresh key without us.
The Texas 4D chip requires OBD-II programming with advanced tools. No DIY shortcut for the transponder. Remote button pairing may follow the same procedure as the 2001-2003 cars, but the chip programming is strictly professional.

Worth Knowing
The NB Miata (1998-2005) was the first Miata generation to run a NATS immobilizer with transponder keys. Every NA Miata before it used a simple mechanical key with zero electronic security. That single change between the NA and NB generations marked the end of an era where you could duplicate a Miata key at any hardware store.
