2003 Mazda Miata
Key Replacement - Save vs Dealer in San Diego

2003 Mazda Miata Metal Key Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional

Out in Eucalyptus Hills, I pulled up to a red 2003 Miata sitting in a driveway off one of those steep residential roads that winds up from the valley floor.

The owner had one key left, and it was worn enough that the ignition was getting finicky. Not every turn would catch. He'd been babying it for a few weeks, wiggling it just right, the kind of thing you do when you know the car too well and don't want to admit it's time to deal with it.

He was a weekend driver. Kept the car clean, soft top in good shape, the kind of guy who actually uses a Miata the way it was meant. He just wanted a reliable spare before the worn original died completely.

I decoded the lock cylinder right there in the driveway. Cut a fresh key to spec, tested it in the ignition and both door locks. Turned clean the first time without any of the hesitation the original was showing. He held the new key next to the old one and you could see how much the original had rounded off over two decades.

He mentioned the dealer had quoted him a wait and a cost that made no sense for a car this simple. I was done and gone in less time than it would have taken him to drive to the dealership.
