2001 Mazda Miata Metal Key Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional
Old Town National City on a Sunday morning. A guy flagged me down near one of the breakfast spots on National City Boulevard. He had a 2001 Miata and a problem that sounded complicated but wasn't.
He had already been to a locksmith. That locksmith told him the key would need programming and the car's security system was involved. He paid for the visit and left with nothing resolved. He was frustrated and starting to think the car had a deeper issue.
I looked at the key. I looked at the ignition. Then I told him what I was looking at: a mechanical key on a car from 2001. The replacement is a cut piece of metal. I decoded the cut from the lock cylinder right there on the street, cut a new key blade on my machine in the van, and handed it to him about fifteen minutes after I arrived.
He stood there for a second. He turned the key. The Miata started.
He asked me why the other guy had made it sound so involved. I told him sometimes people treat every job like it's the newest and most complicated thing out there, when a lot of these older cars just need a well-cut key and someone who knows the difference.
He saved a good chunk compared to what the dealer would have asked, and he saved it compared to the first locksmith visit too.
