2002 Mazda Miata
Key Replacement - Save vs Dealer in San Diego

Q: Do I need to tow my 2002 Miata to the dealer if I have no keys?

Not at all. A mobile locksmith can decode and cut a replacement key right at your location. The dealer would tell you to tow it in because that's their only workflow. For a 2002 Miata, there's no reason for that. The whole job happens on site, and you pay a fraction of what the dealer would charge for the same cut key.

Q: How long does it take to get a replacement key made for a 2002 Miata?

Usually under twenty minutes once I'm on site. I decode the lock or pull the key code, cut the blade, and test it in the door and ignition. There's no programming step, no reset countdown, nothing that adds time. The dealer's version of this same job takes longer purely because of their intake and scheduling process, not because the work is complicated.

Q: Can I just copy my worn 2002 Miata key at a hardware store instead of having it decoded?

You can, but it's a gamble. Hardware store duplicators copy whatever the worn key currently looks like, not what it was originally cut to. On a 22-year-old Miata that's seen daily use, the original key is probably rounded off at the peaks. Copy a worn key and you get a worn cut, which works until the ignition cylinder wears down a little more and then neither key turns cleanly.

Q: My 2002 Miata key turns fine in the door but is stiff in the ignition. Is that a key problem or something else?

Probably the ignition cylinder. On these NB Miatas the ignition cylinder wears independently from the door locks, and after two decades they don't always wear at the same rate. If the door lock confirms the key is cut correctly, the ignition wafers are the likely culprit. A locksmith can rekey or replace the ignition cylinder on site.

2002 Mazda Miata Metal Key Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional

I was out near the Encanto Border side of Lemon Grove on a Tuesday, wrapping up another call, when a guy flagged me down in a parking lot off Broadway. He had a 2002 Mazda Miata, convertible top down, and one very bent key. He'd dropped it under the seat, fished it out with his foot, and apparently a heel to a key blade does real damage.

He was already mentally preparing to deal with the dealer. He'd looked it up and assumed it would be a whole ordeal.

I told him this was about as clean a job as I get. No modules, no programming window, no timed resets. I decoded the lock cylinder right there in the lot, cut a new key blade to match, and handed it to him inside of fifteen minutes. He turned it over twice, top went down, and he just kind of laughed.

The dealer would have taken his car, his afternoon, and a lot more of his money for the exact same result. Sometimes the right tool for the job is just a good cut.

Mazda Miata Mobile Service FAQ

Real costs, no dealer surprises

I lost all my keys to my 2002 Miata. Can you still make a new one without going to the dealer?▼

Yes. This is actually one of the easier all-keys-lost situations I deal with. The 2002 Miata uses a straight mechanical key with no transponder and no immobilizer to reset. I can decode your door lock or ignition cylinder on site, cut a new key to match, and you're done. No tow, no dealer appointment, no waiting on parts to be ordered. I come to you wherever the car is sitting in Lemon Grove.
