Fobik is Chrysler and Ram terminology for an integrated smart key. One single unit holds the transponder chip, the remote entry buttons, and a mechanical blade tucked inside the body. Ram 1500 and HD trucks from 2009 through roughly 2012 use Fobik on standard ignition trims, and the proximity version of the design carries over to Enter-N-Go push-button start trims. The visual giveaway: if the buttons sit on the key body itself with a blade that slides out of the housing, not a separate fob clipped to a keyring, that is a Fobik.

That is the textbook failure pattern on 2009 to 2015 Ram fobs. Tiny metal contact discs are glued to the underside of the rubber buttons inside the fob. Over years of use those discs corrode and start lifting off the pads. Unlock dies first because it gets the heaviest daily use. Lock, panic, remote start keep working because the discs there are not as worn. Cleaning the contacts buys time but not a permanent fix - the corrosion comes back. The cure is a replacement fob. Battery first. CR2032 on 2013 to 2021 fobs, CR2450 on 2022 and newer fobs - getting that wrong by itself produces this exact symptom. The cluster will throw 'Key Fob Battery Low' or 'Remote Key Battery Low' before total fob failure, so look there first. To get the truck running immediately regardless: hold the dead fob flat against the Start/Stop button with your foot on the brake and push the button. The antenna inside the button reads the passive transponder chip at contact range with no battery power required. The hidden blade inside the fob handles the door unlock separately.

Yes. Any Ram 1500 with keyless Enter-N-Go from 2013 forward is exposed to relay attacks. The attack works by using signal amplifiers to bridge the proximity fob's range through walls, fooling the truck into unlocking and starting as if the fob were right there. Ontario police have documented this happening specifically to Ram trucks. There is also a separate Ram problem worth knowing about: the giant infotainment screens are getting pulled and resold on the secondary market. Two low-cost countermeasures cover both threats - a Faraday pouch for the fob at night and a visible steering wheel club on the truck. Both make sense for trucks parked overnight anywhere in the county. Ram trucks were not in the Kia Boys USB hotwiring wave.

Only on pre-2009 Ram trucks with traditional keyed ignitions. The owner-side method on those involves cycling the ignition five times inside ten seconds and using the door cylinder plus unlock buttons to confirm pairing. That covers the remote fob registration only. It does not program the transponder chip, and the transponder is what the truck needs in order to actually start. Anything with push-button start, and any all-keys-lost scenario regardless of model year, requires professional OBD-II equipment, which is what we bring.
