About Ram Keys

Ram key replacement overview in San Diego County

Every Ram truck since 1998 runs Sentry Key for the immobilizer, and every Enter-N-Go truck since 2013 stacks proximity entry on top of it. That covers fourth-gen Laramies with the Fobik, fifth-gen Limiteds with push-button start, and the entire 1500, 2500, 3500 range in between. We program at the truck wherever you parked it - Fallbrook work yard, Carmel Valley driveway, San Marcos office lot. No tow, no shop visit.

Sentry Key and Proximity Fob Work, Done at Your Truck

Ram

Sentry Key has been the immobilizer foundation on every Ram since 1998, so even a basic third-gen 1500 from 2002 needs a programmed transponder before the engine will run. Those third-gen 1500s and HDs from 2002 to 2008 run TI 46 and ID47 chips in remote-head fobs that cut and program through the OBD port without drama. The fourth gen from 2009 to 2018 made things more interesting: the 1500 picked up the Fobik integrated smart key, and 2013 brought Enter-N-Go proximity entry to the higher trims. Every step of that progression is something we cover at the truck.

Ram How the Programming Actually Runs at Your Truck

How the Programming Actually Runs at Your Truck

The fifth-gen jump in 2019 raised the bar. Those trucks use encrypted proximity smart keys that require a PIN read from the BCM before the immobilizer will accept anything new. Autel IM608 plus FCA-compatible programming in the van pulls that PIN at the truck, no dealer trip and no dealer authentication required. For all-keys-lost across the 2009 to 2024 Ram range - 1500, 2500, 3500 alike - we close out the job at your location anywhere across San Diego County without ever putting the truck on a flatbed.

Ram Ram 1500 Key Replacement

Ram

The 1500 is the bulk of our Ram volume county-wide, and it carries the full historical span of Sentry Key technology in active service. Third-gen 1500s from 2002 to 2008 still show up regularly, running TI 46 and ID47 transponders inside FCC ID NHVBN8D2X remote-head fobs. Those are bread-and-butter OBD jobs in our van. Fourth-gen 2009 to 2018 trucks layered in the IYZ-C01C Fobik integrated smart key on standard ignition trims, with Enter-N-Go proximity arriving on Laramie and up starting in 2013.

Ram Fifth-Gen 1500 Key Details

Fifth-Gen 1500 Key Details

Fifth-gen 1500s from 2019 forward use encrypted proximity keys built around the 68381940 part-number series. Either fourth-gen or fifth-gen, our path to all-keys-lost is the same workflow: PIN extraction at the OBD port, key authoring through Autel IM608 and FCA-compatible programming, the truck stays in your driveway. Both generations are fully supported in the van.

Ram Dealer vs. EZ Car Keyz

Ram dealer vs EZ Car Keyz pricing comparison

The dealer ticket on a Ram key job typically runs 50 to 80 percent higher than what a properly equipped mobile locksmith charges. We pull up to your truck with the correct blank already in hand, cut on site, program through OBD, and quote a single flat number. No tow, no per-hour shop labor, no surprise line items at the end.

Ram Key Problems We Fix

Sound familiar? We handle all of these -on site, same day.

Ram Unlock Stops Working on 2009-2015 Ram Fobs
Unlock Stops Working on 2009-2015 Ram Fobs
If your Ram lives in the 2009 to 2015 fourth-gen window and the unlock button quit while everything else still works, you have hit the most common fob complaint on this generation. The metal contact discs glued to the underside of the rubber button pads corrode, lift, and lose conductive contact with the board. Unlock fails first because it gets pressed the most. Cleaning the contacts buys a few weeks at most. Swap the fob and the problem stays gone.
Ram Random 'Key Fob Has Left the Vehicle' on 2021+ Trucks
Random 'Key Fob Has Left the Vehicle' on 2021+ Trucks
A specific pattern shows up on 2021+ fifth-gen Rams, especially 3500 DRW configurations: 'Key Fob Has Left the Vehicle' fires at startup or mid-drive even with a fresh battery in the fob and the fob clearly sitting on the console. Dealers struggle to reproduce it because the fault is intermittent and the truck will not throw it on a bench scan. The signal points away from a dead fob and toward a communication breakdown between the fob and the receiver module inside the truck.
Ram LED Lighting Upgrades Killing Fob Detection
LED Lighting Upgrades Killing Fob Detection
Plenty of Ram 1500 owners across the county chase the LED bulb conversion route - headlights, bed lights, interior. What they sometimes do not connect afterward is the new fob detection problem that started the same week. Cheap LED drivers and ballasts throw electrical noise on the truck's power supply, and that noise can blanket the proximity receiver's working range. If you can timestamp the start of the fob complaint to the install, the lighting is almost certainly the culprit.
Ram Lost Every Key to the Ram
Lost Every Key to the Ram
When every key is gone, the process starts with pulling the security PIN out of the BCM and ends with adding new keys through the Sentry Key system over OBD. That whole sequence works at the truck for the 2009 to 2024 Ram 1500, 2500, and 3500. The sixth-gen 2025+ rollout adds cloud authentication into the loop, which can change what is possible without dealer involvement, so we confirm against your VIN before dispatch.

What to Do When Your Ram Fob Dies

1
Ram fob backup step 1

Every Ram proximity fob hides a mechanical blade inside the housing. Find the small release button on the side or corner, push it, and the blade slides out through a slot in the side of the body. Keep it ready in your hand. The next step needs it.

2
Ram fob backup step 2

Driver door keyhole is usually right on the handle, sometimes hidden behind a small plastic cap that pops off with the blade tip. Slide the blade in, turn to unlock manually, climb in. Heads up: opening with the blade trips the alarm. That is normal and the alarm cuts out the moment the engine fires in the next step.

3
Ram fob backup step 3

Climb in, foot firmly on the brake pedal, hold it there.

4
Ram fob backup step 4

Press the dead fob flat against the push-button Start/Stop switch. The button itself has a coil antenna inside that can wake the passive transponder chip in the fob even with zero battery power. On 2013 to 2018 trucks, the button sits to the right of the steering column. On 2019+ trucks, it lives on the center dash. Hold the fob against the button and push the button at the same time. The engine should fire. If nothing happens on the first try, shift the fob a few millimeters and push again. The pickup zone is small, so position matters.

Pro Tip

Ram pro tip

Here is the thing nobody warns Ram owners about. The battery inside the fob changed sizes between generations. Fourth-gen 1500 and HD fobs from 2009 through roughly 2021 use a CR2032 coin cell - thin, common, sold at every gas station from Chula Vista to Oceanside. Fifth-gen fobs from around 2022 onward, covering the current 1500, 2500, and 3500, run a CR2450 instead. Same diameter as the 2032, but about twice as thick, with roughly double the capacity to match.

Ram Wrong Battery, Wrong Fit

Wrong Battery, Wrong Fit

Drop a CR2032 into a slot built for a CR2450 and the cell sits loose in the holder, contacts intermittently, and produces fob failures that look identical to a busted receiver or a dead fob. Before paying for any diagnosis, confirm the battery you installed is the correct thickness. The FCC ID printed on the back of the fob will tell you which generation you have, and the correct cell spec follows from there.

Ram Owners on Our Service

⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

"Called on New Year's Day at 5 PM. Key worked on ignition and passenger door but not the driver door. He looked at the key more closely and said it could be a worn out key versus a door cylinder. Got the spare key and it worked. Saved me more than $100 compared to changing the door cylinder. Prompt, professional and fair pricing."

Gordon Harada
⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

"EZ Car Keys is by far the best locksmith I've ever used. Marco is prompt, prices are reasonable, and he has the experience that leaves you comfortable. We've used him twice and will never use anyone else!"

Traci Thomas
⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

"Simply amazing. They honored their phone quote even though the job took much longer due to problems with my ignition cylinder. They disassembled, repaired, made two new keys and programmed key fobs - all for the original quote."
