Ram 1500 Key Security, Generation by Generation
DS (4th Gen, 2013-2018): Remote Head Key with SKREEM
You turn this key in the ignition like any other key, but there is a Texas 4D (ID 46) transponder chip inside talking to the SKREEM module under your dash. No push button start on these. Marco programs it through the OBD-II port at the curb, and the whole job takes 20 to 35 minutes flat.
DT (5th Gen, 2019-2024): Smart Key with Push Button Start
Huge architecture jump. The fob stays in your pocket while the truck talks to the RF Hub and Wireless Control Module using the ID4D (PCF7953) chip. Programming a smart key on this gen demands Chrysler server authentication through J2534 hardware on a live link to Stellantis, which is exactly where cheap eBay Autel clones and back-alley 'locksmiths' fall on their faces. Marco runs the genuine Autel IM608 with active SecuriPro subscription.
DT Refresh (5th Gen Facelift, 2025-2026): Updated Smart Key
Same proximity-fob concept as the pre-refresh 5th Gen but riding on the new Uconnect 5 backbone and tightened RF Hub security. Server auth is still mandatory. Marco confirms transponder specs against Stellantis service info BEFORE rolling to your driveway in Carmel Valley or Poway, so the right blank, the right firmware, and the right J2534 dongle are already in the van.
Identify the Key on Your 1500
Looks like a traditional key with the lock/unlock/remote start buttons molded into the head. You actually turn it in the ignition to start the truck, no push button. The transponder chip inside handshakes with the SKREEM module to confirm it is a legitimate paired key.
The fob stays in your pocket. Walk up to the door, grab the handle, press the start button inside. There is a hidden emergency laser-cut blade tucked inside the fob shell for the day the CR2450 battery dies.
Carries the same proximity-fob format as the 2019-2024 generation but with the updated electronics behind the Uconnect 5 refresh. Keeps the hidden emergency blade and runs push button start.

Ram 1500 Key Problems Marco Sees Every Week in 619
SKREEM Module Failure on the 4th Gen DS
Your 2013-2018 1500 cranks but refuses to start, security light solid: SKREEM module behind the dash giving up, water from a leaking windshield drain. Marco sees this weekly across El Cajon, Lakeside, Spring Valley. Diagnoses live with Autel IM608, no Kearny Mesa tow.
RF Hub Lost Pairing After a Jump or Battery Swap
Most '2019+ Ram smart key just died' calls in Carmel Valley and Rancho Bernardo trace to a jump, dead battery, or 12V swap. The fob desynced from the RF Hub. Marco runs the proxy alignment over J2534 with live Chrysler server link in 30-45 minutes.
Wireless Control Module Water Damage
The WCM on 2019-2024 1500s lives behind the dash under a clogged cowl drain or tired windshield seal, and corrodes fast. Symptoms: fob unrecognized, remote functions die, random security light. A new key will NOT fix a corroded WCM. Marco inspects and pulls live data first.
Wrong SKIM Pin Extraction on the 4th Gen
On 2013-2018 1500s, the SKIM pin must come out of the SKREEM before any new key programs. If a prior El Cajon shop pulled it wrong (OBD calculator instead of direct module read), programming fails. Marco pulls the pin directly via SmartPro or AutoProPad.
Can You Program a Ram 1500 Key Yourself?
On a 2013-2018 1500, you can teach the truck NEW remote button functions using a generic OBD scanner like an Autel MK808 IF you already have one fully-working master key on hand. What you CANNOT do at home is program the transponder chip, which requires the SKIM pin extracted from the SKREEM module plus dealer-grade tooling. Lost all keys? You need Marco.
Zero DIY path. The 5th Gen DT needs a live Stellantis (Chrysler) server authentication run through J2534 hardware. No Amazon scanner, no YouTube tutorial, no off-brand Autel clone will get you home. Call Marco at (619) 876-1271 and the truck gets a fully paired smart key at your curb that same day.
Same story as the pre-refresh 5th Gen: server-locked, no aftermarket DIY tool supports full smart-key programming on the 2025-2026 refresh, period. Marco's IM608 stack stays current with the Stellantis updates so the refresh works the same day it does for the older DT.

Did You Know in San Diego?
Here is one nobody tells you: the 5th-gen DT 1500 (2019+) pioneered proxy alignment, a Chrysler handshake where every electronic module has to individually accept the new fob before the engine will fire. That is why a Mira Mesa Ram dealer takes three days and $1,100 to cut a smart key, and why Marco shows up with the live Chrysler server link on the van and gets it done in 45 minutes at your curb.
