Key Replacement - Save vs Dealer in San Diego

2025 Ram 1500 Smart Key Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional

She was in the parking lot of a big box store off Rolling Hills Ranch in Chula Vista, loading groceries while her grandkids waited, when her purse vanished from the cart. Keys, wallet, phone. All of it gone.

She borrowed a phone from another shopper and started making calls. Her son reached out to the dealer first. They said three to five business days, bring the truck in on a flatbed, and quoted a number that made him pause. The concern wasn't just replacing the fobs. It was the stolen one. A stolen smart fob that still has the truck in its memory can start the engine. That had to be addressed before anything else.

He called me next.

I got to the lot that evening. An all-keys-lost job after a theft has a specific order to it. First I wipe the vehicle's key memory entirely so the stolen fob becomes useless to the truck. Then I program fresh keys from zero, because wiping the memory means starting clean. The truck doesn't know any fob at that point until I register the new ones through the diagnostic port. I programmed two new 6-button smart fobs, cut the emergency blade inserts, and ran through every function on both before I packed up.

She drove home that night. The stolen fob is dead to that truck. The dealer would have had her waiting through a week and a tow, and their quote was a significant amount more than what she paid me.

Her son texted me the next morning. The truck started fine, both fobs locked and unlocked without issue, and nobody had to wait three business days.
