2016 Ram 1500
Key Replacement - Save vs Dealer in San Diego

Q: Do I really need to tow my Ram 1500 to the dealer if I have no working keys?

No. A properly equipped mobile locksmith can handle all-keys-lost right where the truck is parked. The 2016 Ram 1500 does not require dealer-only software or factory-access credentials to program keys. We carry the diagnostic equipment to read the vehicle PIN and program new remotes on site. Dealers default to requiring a tow because that is how their service department is set up. We drive to you instead.

Q: How long does an all-keys-lost job take on a 2016 Ram 1500?

Most of the time, about 30 to 45 minutes on site. That covers reading the PIN, resetting the immobilizer, cutting the blade, and programming and verifying the new fob. One thing that can extend the job: if there have been multiple failed key attempts before you called, the vehicle security system sometimes goes into a lockout state that requires a timed wait before new programming will take.

Q: My 2016 Ram 1500 fob works fine at close range but barely does anything from across a parking lot. Is the fob failing?

Short range is almost always the CR2032 going low before it fully dies. The fob will still function at arm's length because the signal only needs to travel a foot or two, but anything past that drops off fast. Swap the battery first. When you open the fob, check that the battery is sitting flat and the contacts are clean.

Q: Can I program a second Ram 1500 remote head key myself at home?

Not on a 2016. There is no ignition-cycle or button-sequence trick that works on this truck for adding a remote head key. Programming goes through the OBD port with a capable diagnostic tool. If you bought a blank fob online, you still need someone with the right equipment to pair it to the truck. The blade also needs to be cut to your specific vehicle, which requires either pulling the key code or decoding the lock mechanically.

2016 Ram 1500 Remote Head Key Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional

I was parked off Shadowridge Drive in Vista when the call came in. A guy had a 2016 Ram 1500 in his driveway and needed a working spare before a long weekend. He had the original fob, it still worked, but he had never gotten a second key made and did not want to be stuck if something happened on the road.

He asked me the question I hear a lot on Ram jobs: OEM or aftermarket, does it matter.

I gave him the honest answer. The fob blank I carry runs the correct transponder chip for the 2016 1500 system. The blade is cut to match his door and ignition. The circuit board handles all five buttons. When the programming is done and the fob is paired to his truck, the truck does not know or care who printed the logo on the back. What matters is the chip type being correct, the blank being quality sourced, and the programming being done right through the OBD port.

I decoded the blade from his existing key, cut a matching replacement, and ran the programming sequence. Both fobs tested on every button, both started the truck. He put the new one on his keyring and tossed his original in the center console as the backup.

He mentioned the dealer wanted significantly more than what he paid me, and would have had him wait a few days for an appointment. He had a working spare key in about thirty minutes, in his own driveway.

Ram 1500 Mobile Service FAQ

Real costs, no dealer surprises

I lost all my keys to my 2016 Ram 1500. Can you still make a new one?▼

Yes. All-keys-lost on a 2016 Ram 1500 is a job we handle on site. The process involves retrieving the security PIN from the vehicle, resetting the immobilizer so it will accept new keys, cutting a fresh blade to the truck, and programming the replacement fob through the OBD port. The old keys get erased in the process, so anything previously lost cannot start the truck anymore.
