I was parked off Shadowridge Drive in Vista when the call came in. A guy had a 2016 Ram 1500 in his driveway and needed a working spare before a long weekend. He had the original fob, it still worked, but he had never gotten a second key made and did not want to be stuck if something happened on the road.
He asked me the question I hear a lot on Ram jobs: OEM or aftermarket, does it matter.
I gave him the honest answer. The fob blank I carry runs the correct transponder chip for the 2016 1500 system. The blade is cut to match his door and ignition. The circuit board handles all five buttons. When the programming is done and the fob is paired to his truck, the truck does not know or care who printed the logo on the back. What matters is the chip type being correct, the blank being quality sourced, and the programming being done right through the OBD port.
I decoded the blade from his existing key, cut a matching replacement, and ran the programming sequence. Both fobs tested on every button, both started the truck. He put the new one on his keyring and tossed his original in the center console as the backup.
He mentioned the dealer wanted significantly more than what he paid me, and would have had him wait a few days for an appointment. He had a working spare key in about thirty minutes, in his own driveway.
