The Cedros Design District in Solana Beach is quiet before sunrise. Most of the studios and shops are dark. That's exactly when I got the call.
A personal trainer had pulled into a nearby lot before his 5am class, went to pull out his key, and the fob housing cracked at the pivot point where the emergency blade folds out. When he tried to use the blade anyway, it snapped off inside the ignition cylinder. He was standing there at 4:45 in the morning holding the fob pod in one hand and staring at a blade stub he could not grab with his fingers. Zero working keys. One class starting in fifteen minutes.
I got there fast. The blade extraction came first. Once the cylinder was clear, I could look at what we actually had. The fob circuit board was intact inside the cracked housing, which matters. When the board survives, I don't have to run a full all-keys-lost reset. I pulled the data I needed from the existing board, built the replacement around it, and programmed the new fob to the truck using my diagnostic equipment. New housing, new blade cut to the vehicle, everything verified before I let him touch it.
He made the 5am class. The dealer wouldn't have been open for hours, and even if they were, he'd have been towing the truck and waiting days for a part order. He saved a good chunk and kept his morning intact.
