ProMaster Key Security, Generation by Generation
Pre-Gateway Era (2014-2019) - San Diego
Ram kept it relatively straightforward: SKIM immobilizer with OBD-II programming. Your ProMaster runs a remote-head key with the ID46 transponder chip (PCF7936) talking to the Sentry Key module near the ignition. Critical detail: on 2014-2016 trucks the 12V battery MUST be disconnected before programming, or you risk frying the SKIM module entirely.
Gateway Era (2020-2022)
Big architecture pivot: FCA bolted on a secure gateway module that blocks ALL unauthorized access to the programming port. Your ProMaster still runs the remote-head key with SKIM, but now a 12+8 FCA bypass cable is mandatory just to talk to the system. Without that cable, the van rejects every programming attempt cold. Same key style in your hand, completely different process behind the dash.
Proximity Update (2022-2024)
Ram finally brought push-button proximity start to the ProMaster starting in 2022. Your 2022-2024 key is now a proximity smart fob (FCC M3N-40821302) carrying the HITAG AES (PCF7953M) chip, no insertion needed. Programming demands gateway bypass AND live Stellantis server authentication, PLUS physical access to the RFH (Radio Frequency Hub) module behind the overhead console for some procedures.
Identify the Key on Your ProMaster
Traditional key with the remote buttons molded into the head. You turn it in the ignition cylinder to crank the van. The transponder chip inside handshakes with the SKIM module on every turn to confirm it is paired.
Looks and operates identical to the earlier 2014-2019 remote-head key, but the van behind it now has the secure gateway module guarding the programming port. Same key blank in your hand, completely different programming process required.
Proximity smart fob that stays in your pocket. The van detects it and lets you push a button to start, no insertion. There is still a mechanical emergency blade tucked inside the fob shell for the day the CR2032 dies on you at an Encinitas job site.

ProMaster Key Problems Marco Sees Weekly in 619
SKIM Module Fried by Live Programming on 2014-2016
On 2014-2016 ProMasters, the SKIM module is brutally sensitive to voltage spikes during programming. If a prior shop plugged OBD-II without disconnecting the 12V first, the module may already be damaged. Marco always disconnects first. Common cleanup in El Cajon.
Gateway Access Denied on 2020+ Trucks
Your 2020+ ProMaster flashes 'access denied' the moment any locksmith plugs in. Normal. FCA bolted on the secure gateway to block unauthorized OBD-II. Marco carries the 12+8 FCA bypass cable on every call, gets past it at a Chula Vista Costco lot or La Jolla dock.
Smart Key Enrollment Needs RFH Access
The 2022-2024 ProMaster proximity smart key requires gateway bypass PLUS live Stellantis server authentication, AND the RFH (Radio Frequency Hub) behind the overhead console must be physically accessed. Marco pulls the console and verifies RFH comms with IM608.
Transponder Not Pre-Coded Before Insertion
Marco checks this FIRST on every ProMaster call. The transponder in the new key blank MUST be pre-coded with KC100 or KC501 (on the bench) before touching OBD-II. Skip pre-code and the immobilizer rejects every single time. Why other locksmiths fail.
Can You Program a ProMaster Key Yourself?
Zero DIY path. The SKIM immobilizer requires professional OBD-II tools plus a pre-coded transponder key. On 2014-2016 specifically, the 12V battery has to be disconnected first or you risk a $600+ SKIM module replacement. No YouTube tutorial gets you home on this generation.
No DIY. The secure gateway module flat-out blocks every OBD-II programming attempt without a 12+8 bypass cable AND professional programming equipment AND active SecuriPro/wiTECH creds. Zero shortcut, zero workaround.
Zero DIY. The 2022-2024 proximity update needs gateway bypass + live Stellantis server authentication + on some configs physical access to the RFH module behind the overhead console. AutoProPAD or SmartPro mandatory. Marco runs the whole stack.

Did You Know in San Diego?
Here is a ProMaster history pivot most fleet owners do not realize: starting in 2020, FCA bolted on the secure gateway module that locked OBD-II direct-access programming out overnight. The straightforward $175 OBD job that worked the day before suddenly required a $300 12+8 FCA bypass cable plus active SecuriPro credentials. Marco runs this cable + IM608 stack on the van every day, especially for the Amazon DSP and last-mile delivery fleets running ProMaster routes between Otay Mesa distribution and North County drop-off zones.
