I was coming out of a job near the Encanto Border side of Lemon Grove when the call came in. A dental hygienist at her office had a spare key she needed made before a work trip. She'd already texted me the VIN before I even pulled out of the last driveway. That kind of prep makes the whole job go differently.
With the VIN I knew exactly what I was walking into: a 2022 Ram ProMaster, five-button fob, the factory FCC ID already on file, CR2032 cell. I had the right blank in the van and could prep it on the way over.
She came out to meet me in the lot with her working fob and her registration. I had the new fob shell and blank on the hood of my van, wrote the transponder data to the new key using my diagnostic equipment, and then ran through the pairing process to register it with the vehicle security system. Because she had a working key, I didn't have to do an all-keys-lost procedure, which saved time on both ends.
Before I handed anything over, I walked the whole van. Tested the new fob at the front cab doors, at the cargo doors, and verified the ignition would fire. Everything behaved exactly the way it should.
She seemed surprised it was done that fast. Dealer had quoted her a wait and a price that was way more than what she paid me. She got a tested spare and was back inside before her next patient.
