About Acura Keys

Every Acura on the road runs a flavor of Honda's immobilizer engineering, and the security lives inside the key. The job splits along one line: do you need a chip cut and paired, or a proximity fob programmed against the ECU? Either way, the work happens at the curb. No flatbed up to the dealer, no week-long parts wait, no four-figure invoice for a job that takes under an hour.
Every Acura Key Type, Programmed Where You Park

Pop the hood on any Acura built since 1995 and an immobilizer module is sitting there waiting to handshake with a chip. No paired chip, no fuel injection, no crank. That covers almost the entire Acura population still on the road: TL, Integra, first-generation MDX, every one of them. Honda's Type 1 and Type 2 immobilizer architecture handles the older platforms, and an OBD-II programmer cuts and pairs a fresh key in the time it takes to drink a coffee.

Where Modern Acura Keys Stand Today
Acura crossed the smart-key threshold twice. First with the 2009 TL, when the brand swapped the ignition cylinder for a button and bolted Type 5 encryption onto the immobilizer. Then with the 2014 MDX, where Type 6 took over and the rest of the lineup followed. Both generations are AKL-serviceable through OBD-II, which is exactly what the XTOOL and Autel hardware in our van is built to do.

What the On-Site Service Actually Looks Like
The 2007 through 2022 Acura window is the AKL sweet spot. Show up with nothing in your hand, leave with two cut and paired keys in the same visit. Lishi decoders for the door, OBD-II programmer for the immobilizer, blank inventory in the drawer behind the driver seat. The dispatch radius runs Camp Pendleton in the north down to the border, mountain to coast, no exceptions.
How Acura Keys Have Changed Over the Years

Acura Dealer vs. EZ Car Keyz

Three line items show up on the dealer invoice for a 2026 MDX smart key: the fob itself at over $250, programming labor on top, and a tow fee that lands you past $400 once you have no working backup. Our quote folds the blank, the cut, and the OBD-II programming into one number, and the truck rolls to wherever the MDX is parked instead of the other way around.

Pro Tip

The Start button on a 2009 to 2014 push-button TL or TSX is doing double duty. Beyond the obvious job of starting the engine, it is also a passive RFID reader. That means a fob with a flat-line CR2032 inside it can still authenticate as long as the chip touches the button. Press the dead fob flat against the button, push, engine cranks. No battery in the fob required for that backup path to work.

Step-by-Step Dead Fob Fix
First problem to solve is getting in the door. Slide the back cover off the fob, pull out the metal emergency blade, unlock the driver door manually, climb in. Then run the press-against-the-button trick to fire the engine. Once the car is moving, the second call is to us, so a fresh fob or fresh battery lands in the cup holder before next week's commute turns into the same drama.
Acura Owners on Our Service
"Called on New Year's Day at 5 PM. Key worked on ignition and passenger door but not the driver door. He looked at the key more closely and said it could be a worn out key versus a door cylinder. Got the spare key and it worked. Saved me more than $100 compared to changing the door cylinder. Prompt, professional and fair pricing."
Gordon Harada"EZ Car Keys is by far the best locksmith I've ever used. Marco is prompt, prices are reasonable, and he has the experience that leaves you comfortable. We've used him twice and will never use anyone else!"
Traci Thomas"Simply amazing. They honored their phone quote even though the job took much longer due to problems with my ignition cylinder. They disassembled, repaired, made two new keys and programmed key fobs - all for the original quote."
