How the TSX Key System Has Changed
First Generation (CL7/CL9)
Honda built this generation on the CL7 and CL9 platforms with a straightforward transponder key system. Your key uses an ID46 chip and a standard cut blade, with the Honda immobilizer verifying the transponder every time you turn the ignition. Programming runs through OBD-II on-board, which means we tackle it right at your car without any dealer server access.
Second Generation (CU1/CU2)
Acura stepped things up here with the CU1 and CU2 platforms, adding Sequential SportShift paddle shifters and a refined 2.4L i-VTEC putting out 201 hp. The key system, though, stayed familiar: same ID46 transponder chip, same standard blade, same Honda immobilizer architecture. The ECU and immobilizer got updated internals, but programming is still on-board through OBD-II, so we tackle both generations the same way right at the car.
Spot Your TSX Key
Old-school metal key with a built-in remote head. The transponder chip inside talks to your car's immobilizer every time you start it. No push-button start on these.
Same concept as the first generation but with an updated fob shape. Standard blade, 3-button remote, and an ID46 transponder chip that the immobilizer checks before letting you start the engine.
Pricing Breakdown by Generation
Quoted prices include the blank, cut, programming, and full test at your address. Nothing tacked on at the end.
Why Skip the Dealer
Acura dealer service on the TSX is thinner than it used to be. The van still runs the right ID46 transponder, the right cutter, and the right programmer for every model year, parked at your car for roughly half what any remaining dealer quote shows.
TSX Key Problems Across San Diego County
Immobilizer Programming Failures
TSX owner in Oceanside notices the key turns fine, but remote lock and unlock stopped responding. Battery is fresh. Common cause is worn button contacts inside the remote head, not programming. We pop the housing and replace the contacts.
Remote Fob Battery Drain
TSX remote stops locking from across the lot, and you assume the fob is dying. TSX fobs burn through CR2032s in 12-18 months instead of 2+ years. Quick battery swap first; if drain continues, the circuitry may need replacement.
Transponder Chip Compatibility Issues
Most assume any ID46 chip works in a TSX. Not always true. Aftermarket chips sometimes fail to register with the Honda immobilizer on the first attempt, and some cheap blanks never register. We use OEM-grade Honda blanks because the success rate is higher.
Key Blade Wear and Ignition Cylinder Binding
We check blade profile and ignition cylinder before recommending anything. The 2004-2008 TSX is prone to accelerated blade wear, and once the blade rounds down, it binds in the cylinder. a fresh-cut key solves it; other times the cylinder needs replacing.
What You Can Program Yourself on a TSX
You can pair the remote lock and unlock buttons yourself using an ignition cycling procedure. But the transponder chip that lets your car actually start requires professional OBD-II programming. So you can DIY the remote, but you still need us for the part that matters most.
Same deal as the first generation. The remote buttons can be paired at home by cycling the ignition and pressing the lock button in a specific sequence. The transponder programming that controls whether your engine starts still requires professional tools and Honda-specific software.

Trivia Worth Knowing
The TSX was developed as the U.S. replacement for the Integra and shares its K-series engine platform with the Honda Civic Si, which made it an immediate enthusiast favorite. The nameplate itself was derived from Type-S eXecutive, reflecting its position between the everyday Civic and the flagship RL. Mechanically the TSX was the European-market Accord with an Acura badge, which is why the transponder system reads identically to a JDM Accord Euro of the same year. Comes in handy when somebody imports one of those into Carlsbad.
