A woman in Cardiff-by-the-Sea called me one evening from a borrowed phone. She'd been at a shopping center in Encinitas when someone grabbed her purse while she was loading bags into her 2009 TSX. Keys, wallet, phone, all of it gone. Her car was sitting in the lot, inaccessible, and she had no way to get home.
Her husband called the Acura dealer first. They told him the car would need to be towed in, they'd have to order parts, and the wait was three to five business days. The quote they gave covered the key itself, programming, and a recommendation to rekey the locks since the stolen fob could still reach the handle. It was a significant number, and that was before the tow.
Then he called me.

Tested every button on both fobs, flipped the blade in and out, walked all four doors.
She drove home that night. Two working keys, stolen fob locked out of the car permanently. The dealer's route would have meant a tow, days without her car, and a much heavier bill. She saved a good chunk and didn't lose a week of her life waiting.
