What Changed With the NSX Key Each Generation
NA1 (3.0L V6)
Your first gen NSX uses a transponder key with a Honda immobilizer system. There is no remote, no fob battery, and no push button start. Just a high-security blade with a chip that talks to your ECU. Programming requires Honda PIN extraction and diagnostic tools; this is not a DIY job.
NA2 (3.2L V6)
Your NA2 got the bigger 3.2L engine, but the key system stayed the same. Still a transponder key with a high-security blade and Honda immobilizer. Same programming process, same tools required. The consistency is actually a good thing because it means parts availability is solid across the entire first-generation run.
Pinpoint Your NSX Key Type
A metal key with a thick plastic head containing a transponder chip. No buttons, no remote. You insert it in the ignition and the chip communicates with the immobilizer to let the engine start.
Same style as the NA1 key. High-security blade with a transponder chip in the head. No remote functions built in. If your NSX has aftermarket keyless entry, that remote is separate from the ignition key.
Cost by Generation
All prices are flat-rate and include the blank, cutting, programming, and testing. No surprise fees.
Why Skip the Dealer
Acura dealers no longer service the NA-chassis NSX with any depth. Our van still does, with the right Megamos transponder, the right cutter, and the right programmer for every model year.
Common NSX Key Issues We See
Transponder Chip Failure
Collector pulls the car out after months and the only key has vanished. The NSX immobilizer from the early 1990s talks to a Megamos 13 transponder. We pull IMMO data through OBD, originate a fresh key from scratch at the car. Title or registration required.
Immobilizer ECU Fault
NSX owners assume a no-start means a bad key. But on 2000-2005 models the immobilizer control unit itself develops faults from years of engine bay heat. We test the key first. If clean, the ECU is next, and we tell you what is going on.
High Security Blade Wear
Key feels harder to turn in the ignition or sticks in the door cylinder. Blade wear. The NSX uses a high-security blade that wears with years of daily use, and a worn blade can lock you out in a Carmel Valley lot. We laser-cut from the original code.
PIN Code Extraction Difficulty
Honda requires a 4-digit PIN to program transponder keys. We carry PIN readers and pull through OBD-II or EEPROM extraction from the ECU. On older NSX models standard methods sometimes fail because data has degraded. At the vehicle.
Programming a NSX Key Yourself
No DIY self-programming for the transponder chip. The NSX immobilizer requires professional diagnostic tools and Honda PIN extraction to register a new key to the ECU. This is a locksmith or dealer job, period.
If your NSX has an aftermarket keyless entry remote, you can program the remote yourself using an ignition cycle method. But this only programs the lock/unlock buttons. It does not touch the transponder chip, so your car still will not start without a properly programmed key.

Trivia Worth Knowing
Back in 1990 the NSX became the first production car in the world to use titanium connecting rods in its engine. Aerospace-grade hardware in a road car was unheard of, and the engineering bled into the rest of the platform. Even the early immobilizer system in the NSX punched above what anything else in Honda's catalog carried at the time. Honda was not just building a supercar, they were proving a Japanese manufacturer could out-engineer Ferrari at Ferrari's own game. The transponder architecture from those years still reads with the same equipment we use on a same-year Integra GS-R.
