1997 Acura NSX
Key Replacement - Save vs Dealer in San Diego

Q: How fast can you get to my location in Solana Beach?

Depends on where you are in the Eden Gardens area and what the schedule looks like when you call. We give you a real arrival window on the phone, not a guess. Because we're already mobile and out on the road, we can often reach you faster than a tow truck could be arranged. Call us and we'll give you a straight answer.

Q: Can I get a replacement key made today?

Almost certainly yes. The 1997 NSX takes a mechanical key, which means I decode the cut from your lock cylinder or existing key and cut a new blade on site. No parts to order, no fob to source, no programming equipment to schedule around. I carry the blanks and cutting equipment in the service vehicle. If you're in Solana Beach and the schedule has room, same-day is the normal outcome, not the exception.

Q: I only have one worn key left for my NSX. Can you copy it, or do you need to decode the lock?

Both paths work, but which one I use depends on the condition of what you have. If the original is worn, copying it directly means the new key inherits the same wear pattern, and that can cause the same sticky behavior in the lock or ignition. Decoding off the door lock cylinder gives me the factory cut depth, not the worn-down version.

Q: The key turns in the door but feels stiff in the ignition. Are those two separate problems?

Not necessarily. On a car that's 25-plus years old, both cylinders wear independently. It's possible the door lock decoded fine and the ignition cylinder has its own wear pattern going on. If a freshly cut key feels smooth in the door but still stiff in the ignition, the ignition cylinder itself may need attention, not the key. That's a separate job from key cutting, but it's worth knowing before you assume a new key will fix everything.

1997 Acura NSX Metal Key Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional

A food truck owner working the farmers market near Eden Gardens in Solana Beach had one key left for his 1997 Acura NSX. Not a spare, not a backup, just the one. He'd been carrying it on a ring with about eight other keys for years and the blade had worn enough that it was getting sticky in the door lock.

He'd already called the dealer. They told him to bring it in, quoted him a wait, and left him with the impression it was going to be a whole thing. He found me between his lunch rush and the afternoon slow-down.

I pulled the key code by decoding the door lock cylinder right there in the market lot. The NSX uses a standard lock format that a good decoder reads cleanly, and this one came through without any drama. Cut a new blade to that code on my portable cutter, checked it against the original, and handed it to him.

He tested it in the door, then the ignition. Smooth both ways. The worn original actually felt looser by comparison once he had the fresh cut in his hand.

No appointment, no tow, no waiting for a weekday slot. He was back at his truck before the afternoon crowd showed up. The dealer visit he'd been dreading turned out to be a parking lot job that took less time than his lunch prep.

How long does a 1997 Acura NSX key replacement take?▼

For a mechanical key like this one, it's a fast job. Once I'm at your vehicle, decoding the lock cylinder and cutting a new blade typically runs 20 to 30 minutes, sometimes less if the cylinder reads cleanly on the first pass. There's no programming wait, no software handshake, no countdown timer. The new key either fits and works or we adjust the cut until it does, right there on site.
