2005 Acura NSX
Key Replacement - Save vs Dealer in San Diego

Q: What kind of key does the 2005 Acura NSX actually use?

It is a plain metal key. No remote, no fob, no buttons, no battery. You insert it into the door lock to get in and into the ignition cylinder to start the car, same as keys worked before electronics took over. Replacement means cutting a new blade to match your locks. That is the whole job.

Q: Why would a dealer take so long on something this simple?

The cutting itself is fast. The delay is everything around it. A repair order has to be written. A tech has to be assigned. The parts department has to locate and pull the correct blank for a vehicle that does not come through the service lane often. If the blank is not in stock, it gets ordered and you wait. Then there is checkout.

Q: I lost my only NSX key. Can you still make one without a working key to copy?

Yes. All-keys-lost on a mechanical key vehicle comes down to decoding the lock. I can decode the door lock or ignition cylinder directly to determine the correct cut, then cut a new key to that specification. No working key needed as a starting point.

Q: Can I get a spare NSX key cut at a regular hardware store or key kiosk?

Unlikely. The key blank for the 2005 NSX is a low-volume item that most retail kiosks and hardware stores do not carry. Automated kiosks like the ones at big-box stores work off common blanks and this one almost certainly is not in their inventory. A locksmith who works with automotive blanks and keeps access to specialty supplier catalogs is a much better option for a car like this.

2005 Acura NSX Metal Key Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional

A guy over in Libby Lake called me about his 2005 NSX. He had one key left and it had seen better days. The blade was worn enough that he was getting occasional no-starts, that moment where the ignition cylinder just sits there and doesn't catch. He wanted a spare made before the worn key gave out completely.

The NSX is not something I see every week in Oceanside. Acura stopped selling them new well before most of my regular calls were built, so the key blank situation takes a little more planning than a typical job. I sourced the correct blank ahead of time, showed up to his driveway, decoded the worn key, and cut a fresh one on the spot.

He handed me the old key and said he had been nursing it for about two years, hoping it would hold on. The new one slid into the ignition cylinder like it was supposed to. He turned it over, it caught immediately, and he just nodded.

That was the whole job. No tow, no dealer appointment, no waiting on parts to be ordered through a service department. Done in the driveway before he had to leave for work. He paid a fraction of what the dealer had quoted just to look at it.

How long does the Acura dealer take for a replacement NSX key?▼

With a car this rare, dealer timeline gets complicated fast. The 2005 NSX is a low-volume vehicle that most dealership service departments see infrequently. Parts staff may need to special-order the correct key blank, which adds days before any cutting even happens. Even if the blank is in stock, you still go through the standard write-up, queue, and tech availability process.
