Worst case on a 2003 Acura NSX is when a previous locksmith attempted the job, something went wrong mid-programming, and the immobilizer is now in a fault state. Power interruption during the security handshake, wrong chip type, or an incomplete registration sequence. Any of those can lock the immobilizer module into a state that makes some techs give up and recommend a dealer tow.

I showed the shop team what went wrong so they'd know to warn customers about battery voltage if it ever came up again.
Total job time was about an hour and fifteen minutes, which is longer than normal. His bill was $95. The alternative was a flatbed to the dealer, a multi-day wait, and $200 or more. I carry backup tools and backup power specifically for situations where the first approach hits a wall.
