What Changed With the ILX Key Each Generation
First Generation (DE)
This is where security got serious for Acura's compact sedan. Your 2013-2015 ILX uses an ID47 (PCF7961X) transponder chip inside a 3-button proximity fob with push-button start standard across all trims. The blade is laser cut, the battery is a CR2032, and we program it on-board through the OBD-II port right at the car.
First Generation Refresh (DE)
Acura stepped things up here with the refreshed ILX, standardizing the 2.4L engine and 8-speed DCT. The key system stayed consistent though: ID47 (PCF7961X) chip, 3-button smart fob, CR2032 battery, laser-cut blade. On-board programming still works, which keeps your cost down and the job fast.
Second Generation (C)
This is where security got serious again. The 2020-2022 ILX moved to a new platform with a 4-button proximity fob and an advanced Honda immobilizer system. Programming on these can require dealer-level authentication depending on the situation, and we will tell you exactly what to expect before we roll out.
Which ILX Key Do You Carry?
This is the original ILX fob with push-button start. It has a hidden laser-cut emergency key inside for when the battery dies.
Same basic design as the earlier model with minor cosmetic updates. Still uses the ID47 chip and on-board programming.
The redesigned ILX fob added a fourth button and upgraded the immobilizer. This one requires professional programming equipment.

Key Fob Battery Drain
Owner walks up to the ILX, door handle works, push-button start does nothing with a fresh battery. The internal coil for emergency proximity has failed, or the column antenna lost signal. We test both at the vehicle in 10 minutes before parts.
Keyless Entry Intermittent Failure
We check the battery first. Nine out of ten times on a 2013-2015 ILX, intermittent proximity failures come down to a weak CR2032 or moisture in the housing. We pop the fob, inspect corrosion, test voltage. Then check the transponder.
Push-Button Start Malfunction
Press the start button and nothing happens. First instinct is dead battery or starter, but on 2013-2019 ILX this is often a weak fob signal. Transponder needs power to talk to the immobilizer. Hold the fob against the button. If it starts, fob battery is it.
2020+ Smart Key Programming Complexity
A lot of locksmiths will not touch a 2020-2022 ILX because the advanced immobilizer can require dealer-level server authentication. We carry equipment for most scenarios at the vehicle, but some need dealer access. We tell you upfront before driving to Poway.
ILX Self-Programming: What Is Possible
No DIY self-programming procedure exists for the ILX. The Honda/Acura immobilizer system requires professional OBD-II scan tools like the Autel IM608 or VVDI to register a new key to your car.
Same story as the earlier models. You need professional equipment to program a new key to your 2016-2019 ILX. No shortcut procedure exists.
The advanced immobilizer on the second-gen ILX makes this even more locked down. Professional programming is the only path, and some functions may require dealer-level access.

The 2013 ILX Hybrid was Acura's first hybrid model ever sold. It shared the 1.5L gas-electric powertrain with the Honda Civic Hybrid and pulled 38 mpg city and highway, considerably better than the 24/34 the regular 2.0L delivered. Acura quietly killed the hybrid trim after 2014 and never replaced it, which makes those one-year-only cars rare birds anywhere on the 619 freeways. The transponder system across all ILX trims was identical regardless of powertrain.
