2016 Acura ILX
Key Replacement - Save vs Dealer in San Diego

Q: Can you delete my lost or stolen key from my Acura so it can't start the car anymore?

Yes. When new keys are programmed to the ILX, the immobilizer clears its existing key memory and registers only the keys present during that session. Any previously registered fob, including a lost or stolen one, loses its ability to start the car. That's how the system is built, not a locksmith trick. One thing to keep in mind: the emergency blade inside a stolen fob can still open the door mechanically, since that's a physical cut, not an electronic one.

Q: Does my 2016 ILX smart key have a hidden emergency blade inside it?

It does. A small release on the back or side of the fob slides a metal blade out. That blade fits the driver's door lock cylinder, hidden under a cap on the door handle. Once inside with a dead fob, hold it against the start button while pressing the brake. The car reads the transponder at close range with no battery power. Most ILX owners learn that sequence at 11pm in a parking lot.

Q: My 2016 ILX shows a key warning on the dash but the fob battery is brand new. What's going on?

This comes up on these cars more than you'd expect. If a fresh CR2032 didn't fix it, there are a few things worth checking before assuming the fob or the immobilizer is the problem. First, make sure the new battery is seated correctly. The contact points inside the fob are small and the cell can sit slightly off without looking wrong.

Q: I bought a replacement fob online for my 2016 ILX. Can I program it myself?

No. The ILX smart key system does not have an owner-accessible self-programming sequence. There's no ignition-turn trick, no button combination. Programming a new smart fob requires OBD diagnostic equipment. The fob you bought will need a locksmith or dealer to pair it.

2016 Acura ILX Smart Key Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional

I got a call from a woman in Old Poway, over near the historic train area. She had a 2016 Acura ILX and wanted a spare smart key made before a trip. Not an emergency. Just someone being smart about it ahead of time, which is honestly the best version of this job.

Her ask was direct: is an aftermarket key actually going to work the same way, or is she going to end up with something that feels cheap and stops working in six months. She'd had a bad experience with a key fob she bought off the internet for a different car years ago. Fair skepticism.

I walked her through it. The blanks I carry for these cars use the same transponder generation the ILX immobilizer expects. Same five-button layout as her factory fob, same housing weight, same button feel. The blade gets cut on my machine to match her existing key exactly. Programming runs through the OBD port with my Honda/Acura-compatible tool, same process a dealer tech would run. I decoded her door lock as a cross-check on the cut, then ran the programming sequence. New key came up registered, tested every button, tested start, tested the door handles. All clean.

The only thing missing was the Acura logo on the back of the fob. That was the whole difference. She saved a good chunk compared to what the dealer quoted her, got it done in her driveway in about forty minutes, and left with a key she was actually going to use daily instead of toss in a junk drawer.

That's the version of this job I like best. Someone who planned ahead and just needed it done right.

Acura ILX Mobile Service FAQ

Real costs, no dealer surprises

What is the cheapest way to handle all-keys-lost on my 2016 ILX?▼

Call a mobile locksmith, not the dealer. All-keys-lost on the ILX is a real job with real steps: the immobilizer has to be reset through the OBD port, a new key gets cut to the vehicle, and the transponder and smart key functions all get registered fresh in the same session. Dealers quote these jobs high, often require a scheduled appointment, and some will ask for a tow to their lot.
