What is the cheapest way to handle all-keys-lost on my 2013 ILX?

Call a mobile locksmith instead of the dealer. All-keys-lost on the ILX means the immobilizer has to be reset through the diagnostic port, new fob registered, and the emergency insert blade cut to the vehicle. Dealers often won't do same-day service on these, and when they do, the cost is a significant amount before you even add towing.

One thing to keep in mind: erasing a key from the immobilizer doesn't affect the physical emergency blade. If a stolen fob still has its blade, it can still open the door mechanically. Does my 2013 ILX smart key have a hidden emergency blade inside it?

It does. There's a small release on the fob body. Press it, slide the blade out, and you have a physical key that fits the driver's door cylinder. On the ILX, the door cylinder is tucked behind a small cap on the handle, so look for that before you assume there's no keyhole.

Once you're inside, hold the fob directly against the start button while pressing the brake. The car will read the fob at close range even if the battery inside it is completely dead. That one trick saves a lot of people from an unnecessary tow. A surprising number of ILX owners don't know either of these things exist until they're standing in a parking lot at night needing both of them.

I bought a replacement fob online for my 2013 ILX. Can I program it myself?

No. The ILX smart key system requires professional diagnostic equipment to register a new fob. There is no ignition-turn sequence, no button trick, no onboard self-programming method for this system. That kind of DIY relearn only exists on older vehicles with a basic transponder key in an ignition cylinder. The ILX smart key is a different setup entirely.

If you already bought the fob, it's not wasted. Bring it or have it on hand when you call. As long as the fob is the correct one for your vehicle, I can program it on site. Just don't let anyone sell you the idea that you can finish the job at home.

My 2013 ILX shows a key warning on the dash but the fob battery is new. What else could cause that?

A few things. The CR2032 could be seated slightly off and not making clean contact with both terminals. That's more common than it sounds, especially if the fob was pried open instead of released cleanly. Reseat the battery and check the contact clips before assuming anything worse.

If the battery is genuinely seated correctly and you're still seeing the warning, the next thing to look at is the fob itself. The ILX smart key has an internal circuit board that can develop issues over time, particularly around the battery contacts if there's been any corrosion. A warning that appears intermittently and then clears on its own points in that direction.

If the warning is consistent and the fob is confirmed working in close range to the start button, the antenna or wiring on the vehicle side is worth checking. Either way, it's diagnosable on site.
