My key broke in the ignition. Can you get it out?

Yes, broken key extraction is a standard on-site job. We carry the tools to pull the broken piece out without damaging the ignition cylinder. Once it's out, we cut a new key from your vehicle's lock data and program it on the spot.

One thing worth knowing on the ILX specifically: the fob on these has a folding insert key built in. That pivot point takes a lot of stress over years of use, and the housing can crack right at the hinge. If that's what snapped, we can sometimes salvage the electronics and move them into a new shell rather than replacing everything. If the blade broke off inside the cylinder itself, that's still a clean extraction job. Either way, you're not stranded.

What exactly is a smart key and how is it different from a regular key?

Your 2014 ILX uses a smart key, which means the fob communicates wirelessly with the vehicle security system to authorize the engine to start. It also has a physical insert key folded inside the housing, which you can use as a backup if the fob stops being detected.

The difference from an older key is that cutting the blade alone does nothing. The fob has to be enrolled to your specific vehicle through diagnostic equipment before it will start the car. That's why a key made without proper programming, or made with the wrong internal components, can appear to work and then fail later. The blade and the electronics are two separate parts of the same job, and both have to be done right.

My Acura says key not detected. What should I do first?

Start with the CR2032 battery in the fob. A weak battery is the most common reason for that warning on these vehicles, and it doesn't always kill the fob completely. It just degrades the signal until the car stops picking it up reliably.

If you've already swapped the battery and it's still happening, try this: take the insert key out of the fob, hold the fob body directly against the start button, then press the brake and try to start. That triggers a backup RFID read that bypasses the wireless signal entirely. It works when the battery is too low to broadcast normally, or when there's interference.

If a fresh battery and the backup method both fail, the fob may need to be re-enrolled, or there's something going on with the vehicle side of the system. That's when you call us.

Question 4

I bought a replacement fob online. Can I program it myself or do I need someone with equipment?

You need equipment. There is no ignition-turn sequence or button trick that enrolls a new smart key on the 2014 ILX. That kind of onboard self-programming exists on some older vehicles with a basic key-in-ignition setup, but the ILX smart key system requires a diagnostic tool to register the fob to the vehicle.

The fob you bought online can absolutely be used, as long as it's the right one. We can pair it on site. Just know that until it's enrolled through the OBD port with the right software, it's a paperweight with buttons.

I only have one key left for my ILX. Should I get a spare made now or wait until it's a problem?

Get the spare now. All-keys-lost on a smart key vehicle is a longer, more involved job than simply adding a second key while one working key is still present. When you have a working key, the process is faster and generally less expensive.

Losing your last key means the diagnostic process has to start from scratch with no reference point, and depending on the situation, the vehicle security system may need additional steps to accept new credentials. It's not impossible, we handle it regularly, but it takes more time. A spare made today while everything is working is the easier version of this job by a wide margin. In Oceanside, being stuck in a parking lot in San Luis Rey with no key and no backup is a situation worth spending a little time now to avoid.
