The TLX Key, Generation by Generation
1st Generation (UB1/UB2/UB3)
Your first gen TLX uses a proximity fob with an ID47 (PCF7961X) transponder chip. That means push button start, a high security blade tucked inside the fob, and OBD-II programming through the diagnostic port. We pull the PIN code from your ECU and program the key right at the car. Straightforward job, no dealer needed.
1st Generation Facelift (UB1/UB2/UB3)
Your 2018 to 2020 TLX carries the same ID47 (PCF7961X) chip and proximity fob setup as the earlier models, just with an updated fob design and a slightly different FCC ID. Programming is still OBD-II based. The one thing we watch for on all keys lost situations is verifying the ECU PIN code, which we extract at the car with our Autel IM608.
2nd Generation (KA1/KA2)
Your second gen TLX moved to the new KA platform and things got more involved. The proximity fob still uses a high security blade and CR2032 battery, but programming may require server authentication on top of OBD-II access. We carry the tools and subscriptions to handle that. If your specific year and trim needs dealer server access, we will tell you upfront before we roll out.
Spot Your TLX Key
Black proximity fob with the Acura logo on the back. Push button start, keyless entry, and an emergency blade hidden inside for when the battery dies.
Updated fob design, same basic functionality. Three buttons, push button start, and a high security emergency blade inside. Looks nearly identical to the earlier version.
Redesigned fob for the second generation TLX. Same CR2032 battery and three button layout. The emergency blade slides out from the bottom of the fob.
Cost by Generation
Quoted prices include the blank, cut, programming, and full test at your address. Nothing tacked on at the end.
Why Skip the Dealer
Dealer-grade programming gear in the van, parked at your address, for roughly half what Acura's service department quotes.
What Goes Wrong With TLX Keys
Smart Key Fob Battery Drain
Owner replaces the dead 12V on a 2017 TLX and the smart key refuses to be detected. The immobilizer dropped its handshake with the fob during the voltage cut. Reseating it needs an OBD-II re-sync, not a new fob. We handle it at the vehicle in 15 minutes.
Transponder Programming Failures
Shops blame the key when programming fails on a 2015-2020 TLX. If a locksmith said it could not be done, ring (619) 876-1271 for a second opinion. Usually a bad PIN extraction or a tool that cannot read Honda. We use Autel IM608 to pull the 8-digit ECU PIN.
High Security Blade Breakage
Your TLX emergency blade snapped in the door cylinder. The HU101 blade profile is thin by design, and if you are using it the fob battery died, too much force and it breaks. Happens more than you think. We carry replacements and cut at the car.
Immobilizer Sync Issues After Battery Replacement
On the 2021-2023 TLX, disconnecting the car battery can knock the immobilizer out of sync with your proximity fob. Car cranks but will not start, or push-button ignores the fob. Known quirk. Requires a specific OBD-II relearn, not cycling the ignition.
DIY Programming Options on the TLX
No self-programming method is available for any Acura TLX. You need an OBD-II programmer like the Autel IM608 or Honda HDS to get the job done. Every generation requires professional diagnostic equipment to sync the transponder chip with the Honda immobilizer system.

Trivia Worth Knowing
The 2015 TLX shipped Acura's first dual-clutch transmission on the 2.4L trims, paired with an electronic push-button shifter that replaced the traditional gear lever. Drivers either loved it or absolutely hated it, no middle ground in the owner forums. Underneath all that, the smart key system was a refinement of what shipped on the late TL and ILX, which is why the same Autel IM608 in our van programs all three families identically. We still see plenty of 2015-2017 TLX smart key calls roll through Mira Mesa and Rancho Bernardo every week.
