2016 Acura TLX
Key Replacement - Save vs Dealer in San Diego

Q: What exactly is a smart key and why does it need programming?

The smart key your 2016 TLX uses is more than a remote. It carries a transponder chip that has to be registered to your specific vehicle's immobilizer before the engine will start. The fob also handles keyless entry through the door handle sensors. A correctly cut but unprogrammed key blank will physically turn nothing relevant and won't start the car. The immobilizer rejects it.

Q: How long does Acura dealer key replacement actually take?

Longer than the programming itself warrants. Owners on forums consistently report that the technical work is quick, but the full dealer visit stretches to a half day or more once you factor in scheduling, service intake, and waiting for a tech to get to it. Parts availability is a separate problem.

Q: I have one key left for my 2016 TLX. Can you still add a second without the dealer?

Yes, and this is actually the easier scenario. When at least one working key is present, the immobilizer doesn't need a full reset. I register the new fob alongside the existing one so both work. All-keys-lost is a separate procedure that takes a bit longer because the system goes through a security reset with a timed sequence built in. If you have one key in hand, get the spare made now.

Q: My 2016 TLX door handle touch unlock stopped working on one side. Is the fob failing?

Probably not the fob. If the other door handle still triggers unlock and the start button recognizes the key normally, the fob is doing its job. The touch unlock sensors sit in each door handle and can fail independently. They're also sensitive to dirt and moisture buildup around the sensor area. Clean the handle, retest, and see if the failure stays isolated to that one door.

2016 Acura TLX Smart Key Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional

There's a dog park tucked near Rancho Del Oro that gets steady foot traffic on weekend mornings. I pulled up on a Saturday to meet a retired firefighter who'd been running his 2016 TLX on one key since he bought it used.

He wasn't locked out. He just knew he was one bad day away from being stranded, and he'd been putting it off for months the way people do when they assume it's going to be a whole ordeal. He finally called the dealer, got a number that made him pause, and found me the same afternoon.

I decoded the door lock cylinder on site and cut a replacement key blade to match. Then I connected through the OBD port, registered the new fob to the vehicle's immobilizer, and verified the original key still worked alongside it. Both fobs tested clean: touch unlock on the door handles, the start button, everything. Start to finish was about 35 minutes.

He watched the whole thing from a bench while his dog did laps. He mentioned he figured it would take most of a day if he went through the dealer. It took less than an hour and he never left the park.

Acura TLX Mobile Service FAQ

Real costs, no dealer surprises

Do I have to go to the Acura dealer to get a replacement key for my 2016 TLX?▼

No. A qualified mobile automotive locksmith with Honda and Acura immobilizer tooling can cut and program a smart key for the 2016 TLX on site, wherever the car is parked. Acura shares its underlying key and security architecture with Honda, so a specialist who works that platform regularly handles TLX programming the same way they handle any other vehicle in that family. Generic hardware store locksmiths are a different story.
