5th Gen: Pure Mechanical
5th-gen CD launch through 1997. Plain mechanical blade, no immobilizer. Hardware-store copies work. Cheapest cut we make.
6th Gen: First Transponder
The 6th-gen CG (1998-2002) is the dividing line. Honda adds its first immobilizer with the Philips ID46 transponder buried in the key head. No chip equals no fire, no matter what blade is in the cylinder.
7th Gen: Remote Head Key
The 7th-gen CL/CM continues with ID46 transponders through 2003-2007. Slightly updated BCM logic but the locksmith workflow is identical to the 6th gen. OBD pairing, two-key learn, done.
8th Gen: Flip Key Era
The 8th-gen CP and CT (2008-2012) keep the ID46 chip but move to a remote-head form factor with three buttons. On-board two-key programming still works if you have two originals. The high-security blade needs a code machine.
11th Gen: Smart Key with Push Start
The 9th-gen CR (2013-2017) and 10th-gen CV (2018-2022) flip to rolling-code smart proximity with push-button start. This is the build range named in the Rolling Pwn advisory affecting Honda 2012-2022. Server authentication required for any add-a-key job.

6th and 7th-Gen Immobilizer Sync Loss
1998-2007 Accords with 20-plus years of service drop the ID46 trust handshake. We read the ECU PIN, clone to a fresh chip, cut a new blade. $200-$300 in your driveway.
8th-Gen Remote Module Moisture Corrosion

Smart Key Server Auth Hangs (9th-10th Gen)

Honda 2012-2022 builds are affected by the Rolling Pwn rolling-code vulnerability. We can pair-test aftermarket immobilizer add-ons and install RFID pouches as a defense.
Can You Program an Accord Key in Your Driveway?
N/A on 5th gen. Hardware-store copy works. No programming exists.
No on 6th gen. ID46 chip requires ECU PIN read and OBD programming.
Sort of on 7th gen. Two-key procedure adds a third if you have two working. New key still needs cut and chip programmed first.
