CR-V Key Evolution 1997 to 2025
First Generation (RD1)
1st-gen launch 1997-2001. Standard transponder with Philips ID46 chip on most builds. On-board two-key programming works if you have two originals.
Second Generation (RD2)
The 2nd-gen 2002-2006 keeps the ID46 immobilizer in a three-button remote with a separate transponder key. Same OBD pairing path as the 1st gen; the locksmith side is unchanged but the trim now has two pieces in your pocket.
Third Generation (RE1-RE7)
The 3rd-gen RE (2007-2011) consolidates everything into a remote-head key with the ID46 chip and three buttons. The 4th-gen RM (2012-2016) carries that same ID46 architecture into the transition years before push-button start landed.
Fifth Generation (RW1-RW8, RT5-RT6)
5th-gen 2017-2022 uses FCC N5F-S0084A for the smart proximity fob with rolling-code authentication. Push-button start. Server auth required for add-a-key.
Sixth Generation (RW9+)
The 6th-gen RS (2023-2025) refines the rolling-code trust chain with tighter server-side checks. Same N5F FCC family on the proximity fob, but Honda has hardened the pairing flow against the Rolling Pwn attack class.
Identify Your CR-V Key
Standard transponder with Philips ID46 chip in the head. 1997-2001 1st-gen.
Three-button remote with ID46 transponder. 2002-2006 2nd-gen.
Remote-head with ID46 chip. 2007-2016 3rd-4th gen.
Smart proximity fob with N5F-S0084A FCC. Rolling-code auth. 2017-2022 5th-gen.
The 6th-gen RS fob looks nearly identical to the 5th-gen but rides on a hardened rolling-code stack. Same FCC family, same laser-cut emergency blade tucked inside.

CR-V Problems We Fix in San Diego
ID46 Immobilizer Sync Loss
1st through 4th-gen CR-Vs lose the ID46 trust handshake after 15-plus years. Dash lights, no crank. We read the ECU PIN, clone to a fresh chip, cut a new blade on-site.
N5F-S0084A Fob Battery Confusion
The 2017-2022 5th-gen smart fobs run a CR2032 cell, but the case stamping has worn off on a lot of fobs by now. We see owners drop in a CR2025 by mistake and chase phantom range loss. We confirm the cell visually and pair-test before leaving the call.
5th and 6th-Gen Smart Key Auth Hangs
Smart-key CR-Vs from 2017 forward drop the rolling-code trust chain after any 12V event: jump start, battery swap, alternator job. Doors lock but engine refuses. Honda HDS server auth re-pairs the fob in your Carmel Valley driveway.
Rolling Pwn Exposure (2017-2022)
5th-gen 2017-2022 CR-V sits on the Honda 2012-2022 rolling-code stack named in Rolling Pwn. RFID-blocking pouches stop the relay attack for under $20 on your nightstand. We can also pair-test aftermarket immobilizer add-ons.
Can You Program a CR-V Key in Your Driveway?
Sort of on 1st gen. Two-key on-board procedure adds a third if you have two working. New key needs cut and chip programmed first.
Two-key learn carries over to the 2nd-gen 2002-2006. Two originals in hand, you can pair a third. The blade still leaves our truck pre-cut with the ID46 chip already written.
Two-key procedure still works on the 3rd and 4th-gen builds (2007-2016). Two originals on hand pairs a third onboard. We handle the upstream HU100 cut and ID46 write in your driveway.
No on 5th gen. N5F-S0084A smart proximity requires Honda server auth. Pro tools only.
No on 6th gen. Tighter rolling-code auth than 5th gen. Pro tools only.

CR-V Trivia
The CR-V launched US-market for 1997 as Honda's compact crossover, sharing platform bones with the Civic and HR-V. The N5F-S0084A FCC on the 5th-gen 2017-2022 fob is the most common Honda smart key in service today across the US, given how many CR-Vs Honda built. The 2017-2022 build range is affected by Rolling Pwn, where attackers capture and replay rolling-code signals.
