There's a stretch of Old Poway on a Saturday morning that smells like sawdust and coffee and has more vintage furniture than any four antique shops combined. That's where I met the owner of a 2015 CR-V with a dead smart key.
She ran a little booth selling refinished furniture at the Poway flea market. Her fob had been getting flaky for about two weeks. Short range. Intermittent key-not-detected warning on startup. Then one Saturday it just stopped working entirely and she couldn't get the push-button start to respond at all.

That moved it from a battery call to a programming call. I connected to the OBD port, ran the pairing sequence with the dealer part number fob she'd already sourced, and enrolled it to the immobilizer. The whole process took just under 40 minutes including the cut for the emergency insert blade and a full button test: lock, unlock, panic, liftgate.
She was back at her booth before the next customer showed up. The car never moved from that gravel spot.
She mentioned the dealer quote on her way back. My price was a fraction of what they wanted, and they hadn't even confirmed the part was in stock.
