Pilot Key Evolution 2003 to 2025
1st Generation (YV1)
1st-gen 2003-2005 launch. Honda's first three-row SUV. Standard transponder with Philips ID46 chip (not ID47 as some aftermarket databases claim). Phase 1 correction confirmed this for 2003-2005 specifically.
2nd Generation (YV2)
1st-gen 2006-2008 facelift continued the Philips ID46 architecture in a remote-head transponder. Same OBD pairing as launch builds. Same two-key on-board learn if you have two originals. No surprises for the locksmith side.
3rd Generation (YG3)
2nd-gen 2009-2015 is the transition era. Early builds in this range still carry ID46 from the 1st gen, later builds drift toward the ID47 architecture that became standard on the 3rd gen. We verify the chip on a transponder reader before cutting because the era is genuinely mixed.
4th Generation (TL)
3rd-gen 2016-2022 standardized on the ID47 chip with smart proximity and push-button start (Phase 1 corrected the older ID46 claim some databases still list). This build range is named in the Rolling Pwn rolling-code advisory.
5th Generation (YK)
4th-gen 2023-2025 stayed with ID47 but Honda tightened the rolling-code server auth window noticeably. Push-button start across every trim. Server-side checks make all-keys-lost jobs a longer phone call up front.
Identify Your Pilot Key
A traditional metal key with a transponder chip inside the plastic head. It looks like a regular key, but the chip has to match your Pilot's immobilizer or the engine will not start.
Remote-head transponder with ID46 chip. 2006-2008 facelift.
Remote-head transponder. ID46 or ID47 depending on build year. 2009-2015 2nd-gen.
Smart proximity fob with ID47 chip and rolling-code auth. 2016-2022 3rd-gen.
Honda's latest proximity fob with a precision laser-cut emergency blade. Same push-button start convenience, but with tighter security under the hood.
Pilot Key Pricing in San Diego
Pricing covers the key, blade cut, programming, full test. No trip fee in San Diego County. Standalone lockout $105-$145.
EZ Car Keyz vs. San Diego Honda Dealer
Same OEM-grade smart key, same warranty. Difference is the dealer wants a tow plus a 3-to-5-business-day slot. Marco rolls to your Carmel Valley driveway and programs the Pilot on the truck.
Pilot Problems We Fix in San Diego
1st-Gen ID46 Sync Loss (Not ID47)
2003-2005 Pilots use ID46 chip, not ID47 as aftermarket databases sometimes claim. After 20+ years, the ID46 trust handshake drops. We read the ECU PIN, clone to a fresh ID46 chip, cut a new blade.
3rd-Gen ID47 Sync Loss (Not ID46)
2016-2022 3rd-gen Pilots run ID47, not ID46. Aftermarket databases miscredit this constantly. Wrong chip means engine cranks but never fires, immobilizer light flashes, owner thinks the car is broken. We verify on a transponder reader before cutting.
Smart Key Server Auth Hangs
3rd and 4th-gen Pilots drop smart-key trust chain after 12V events. Honda HDS server auth required, which we do on-site.
Rolling Pwn Exposure (2016-2022)
3rd-gen 2016-2022 Pilot is covered by Rolling Pwn like the rest of the Honda 2012-2022 stack. RFID-blocking pouches block the relay attack at home for $15-20. We can pair-test aftermarket immobilizer add-ons if the school-pickup threat keeps you up.
Can You Program a Pilot Key Yourself?
Sort of on 1st-gen ID46. Two-key procedure adds a third with two working keys. New key needs cut and ID46 chip programmed first.
Same on 1st-gen facelift. Two-key procedure works with two originals.
Same on 2nd-gen. Cut and chip programming require a locksmith.
No on 3rd-gen smart-key. Honda server auth required.
No on 4th-gen. Tighter rolling-code auth. Pro stack only.

Pilot Trivia
The Pilot launched US-market for 2003 as Honda's first three-row family SUV, sharing platform bones with the Acura MDX. Honda kept the Philips ID46 chip across the 1st-gen 2003-2008 builds, then transitioned to ID47 starting with the 2016 3rd-gen redesign. The 2003-2005 1st-gen specifically uses ID46, while the 2016-2022 3rd-gen specifically uses ID47, both of which several aftermarket databases get wrong.
