She was at a taco stand patio in San Ysidro Village after a long shift and her bag was gone. Someone had grabbed it off the table, keys, wallet, phone and all. She borrowed the cashier's phone, called the police, then her sister, then me.
Her 2005 Honda Pilot was sitting in the lot with zero keys to its name. The dealer told her sister they could order the part but it would take several business days, the car would need to be towed in, and they were recommending a rekey since the stolen key could still open the doors. The combined estimate was not small.
I got there that night. All-keys-lost on this generation Pilot is a different animal than adding a spare. Adding a spare works because the car already trusts an existing key and just appends a new one to its memory. When every key is gone, I have to clear the immobilizer memory entirely and register fresh keys from scratch. No existing trusted key to lean on.
I connected my programmer to the OBD port, wiped the old key data so the stolen key would be dead to the car's security system, and enrolled two new remote head keys. Then I decoded the door lock mechanically and cut both key blades to match. Tested every button on both fobs, confirmed both keys started the engine, and walked her through the battery replacement on the CR1616 while we stood in the lot.
She drove home that night. The dealer's route meant a tow, a multi-day wait, and a bill that was a significant chunk more than what she paid me. The stolen key can still physically reach the lock cylinder, but the immobilizer will not let the engine run. Old key is dead. Two fresh keys in her hand.
