I got a call from a guy in Scripps Ranch who had just moved to San Diego from out of state and was still getting settled. He had a 2003 Honda Pilot, one key, and that one key had snapped. Not lost, just broke clean at the base of the blade where it met the bow. The blade was still in his pocket. The head with the chip and the remote buttons was in his hand. Two pieces.
He had already called the dealer. The appointment they offered him was days out, and the quote made him pause enough to start looking for other options.
When I showed up, the first thing I did was look at what was left of the blade. Still readable. I was able to use it to get the cut depth, which saved us from having to pull the lock or dig up the key code another way. Cut a new blade, transferred the working chip assembly through a new key shell, and then programmed it to the vehicle through the OBD port.
Before I packed up, I tested every function on site. Key turns, engine starts, remote works. The whole job happened in his driveway while he was still on a work call inside.
He mentioned afterward that the dealer quote alone had him thinking he might just drive with a screwdriver for a week. Not the plan I would recommend for a Pilot with a live immobilizer system. He saved a good chunk, and he didn't have to leave the neighborhood.
