1st-gen US launch 2007-2008. Standard transponder with Philips ID46 chip. Separate three-button remote. On-board two-key programming works.
1st Gen Facelift (GE6/GE8)
2nd-gen GE platform 2009-2014. Honda integrated the remote and transponder into a single remote-head housing with the same ID46 chip the 1st gen used. Magic Seat era. On-board two-key learn still works with two originals.
2nd Gen (GE/GG)
2nd-gen facelift era same GE chassis with the GG export sibling. ID46 chip carries forward unchanged. Same remote-head form factor. No new pairing tricks compared to the launch builds.
3rd Gen (GK)
3rd-gen GK platform 2015-2020. Most builds keep the remote-head transponder with ID46. 2018 and later high-trim Fits added optional smart proximity with rolling-code authentication. Lower trims rode out the model with the transponder remote-head to the 2020 discontinuation.

1st and 2nd-gen Fits lose the ID46 trust handshake after 12-plus years. Dash lights, no crank. We re-pair on-site.
2018+ Smart Proximity Auth Hangs
Higher-trim 2018-2020 Fits with the smart proximity fob drop the rolling-code trust chain after a 12V drop. Jump start, battery swap, alternator job. Doors still unlock but engine refuses. Honda HDS server auth pairs the fob back to the immobilizer.
Remote Head Housing Wear
Fit remote-heads get hammered by drivers using the key as a crowbar for grocery bags and Magic Seat latches. The rubber dome over the unlock button cracks first. We rebuild the housing or transfer the ID46 chip and blade into a fresh shell at the curb.
Coastal Humidity Module Corrosion
Encinitas and Carlsbad Fits get module corrosion from coastal humidity. The remote stops responding intermittently, then quits. We pull the module, swap to a known-good replacement, and pair it to your VIN before leaving.
Can You Program a Fit Key Yourself?
Sort of on 1st-2nd gen. Two-key procedure adds a third with two working keys. New key needs cut and chip programmed first by a locksmith.
Sort of on early 3rd-gen. Same two-key procedure works if you have two originals.
No on late 3rd-gen smart-key. Honda server auth required.
Definitely not for all-keys-lost. ECU PIN read and ID46 chip write require pro equipment.

Fit Trivia
The Fit landed in US showrooms for 2007 after six years selling as the Jazz in Europe and Asia. Honda gave the 2nd-gen GE the under-seat fuel tank that made the Magic Seat fold-flat trick possible. The US market lost the Fit after 2020 even though demand was healthy, killed by a profit-margin calculation. Through 2017 the chip is Philips ID46; higher-trim 2018-2020 builds were the only Fits to optionally ship smart proximity, with base trims keeping the remote-head transponder to the end.
