The call came from Ocean View Hills, but the car was not there.
A photographer had driven out toward the canyon overlook area near Otay Mesa for a shoot. Somewhere between gear bags and framing shots, both of his keys to a 2012 Honda FIT went missing. He had no spare at home. He hiked back to where he could get a signal and started making calls. Two people told him all-keys-lost on a Honda with a programmed remote head key was dealer-only work. A third told him the car would need to be towed in because nothing could be done on-site without the dealer pulling the vehicle's immobilizer data from their internal systems. By the time he reached me he had already mentally resigned himself to a tow bill plus a long wait.
I drove out to him.
The 2012 FIT remote head key is a four-button unit with a transponder chip inside the head. When all keys are lost, the immobilizer has no authorized key to recognize. The car will not start, and there is no mechanical fallback that bypasses the security system. The job requires diagnostic equipment that can communicate with the immobilizer through the OBD port, read or clear the existing key data, and write new key data to a blank fob. That is the tool-dependent part. I backed up the immobilizer data before touching anything, then ran the all-keys-lost sequence. New fob, blade cut to the vehicle, programmed and tested on site.
He watched the whole thing from a folding camp chair with a camera in his lap.
The car started at a canyon overlook with no cell service and no tow truck involved. When I told him what the dealer route would have cost, including the tow, he just looked at the fob for a second and said he needed to stop listening to people who assume dealer-only means impossible.
