Out in Fernbrook, I got a call about a 2008 Honda FIT where the owner said the remote had "just stopped working." No warning, no gradual fade. Worked one day, dead the next.
When I pulled up, the first thing she handed me told the story. The key blade had a slight wiggle to it, and when I looked at the housing, there was a hairline crack running from the blade anchor toward the button panel. That kind of stress fracture happens slowly, but the day it finally shifts, it can pinch or misalign the internal board contacts just enough that the remote stops transmitting. The blade was still intact and the key still turned the ignition, so she hadn't noticed anything wrong until the lock and unlock buttons went silent.
I confirmed the transponder was still reading fine by testing the start. Engine came up clean, which told me the immobilizer side of things was okay. The problem was isolated to the remote function, not the chip. I replaced the housing, reseated the board, put in a fresh CR1616 battery, and tested the remote range walking away from the car. Lock, unlock, the panic button, all of it. Then I started the car three more times from the seat to confirm the transponder was still handshaking correctly after the housing swap. Everything came back solid.
She mentioned she'd been quoted a full key replacement at the dealer. Didn't need it. The chip was fine, the blade was fine. It was the housing. Right diagnosis, right fix, done in her driveway in Fernbrook.
