Over in The Bridges in Rancho Santa Fe, I got a call from a couple who had one key to their 2016 Honda Fit and had just watched it crack at the base of the blade. The remote head was in one hand, the blade was stuck in the door lock cylinder, and they had no spare. That was the whole situation.

The key type here is a smart fob with an integrated emergency blade, so losing it is not like losing a simple metal key. The fob carries the transponder element and the remote functions in one unit. No fob means no start.

The good news was the fob housing cracked but the electronics inside were intact. I extracted the blade fragment from the door cylinder, decoded the lock from what I could read, and cut a fresh blade. The internal components from the original fob were still functional, so I transferred them into a new shell rather than treating it as a full all-keys-lost job. That matters because an all-keys-lost procedure on this generation Fit takes longer and involves erasing the vehicle's existing key memory entirely before registering new ones.

I programmed a second fob while I was there so they would not end up in the same spot a year from now. Tested both fobs at every door, confirmed start on both, and showed them where the emergency blade releases on the new unit in case the battery ever runs flat.

They went from zero working keys to two. The dealer had been mentioned in passing, mostly as a reference point, but by the time I was packing up the conversation had moved on to something else entirely.
