Insight Key Evolution 2000 to 2022
Launch Year Transponder
1st-gen launch year. Aluminum-body 2-seater IMA hybrid coupe. Standard transponder with the Philips ID46 chip in the head, no remote integrated. Looks like a plain mechanical blade but the chip prevents any hardware-store copy from firing the engine.
CVT Era, Same Key
1st-gen 2001-2003 CVT era. Honda added the CVT transmission option but left the key system alone. Same ID46 transponder, same standard blade, same OBD pairing workflow as the launch year.
Remote Head Key Arrives
1st-gen 2004-2006 final years. Honda consolidated the key and remote into a three-button remote-head still running the ID46 chip. Last of the original two-seater Insights before Honda discontinued the nameplate (later revived as a different platform in 2010).
Identify Your Insight Key
Standard transponder with Philips ID46 chip. 1st-gen IMA coupe. 2000-2006.
Remote-head transponder with same ID46 chip family. 2nd-gen hatchback. 2010-2014. Some builds carry smart-key option.
Insight Key Pricing in San Diego
Pricing covers the key, blade cut, programming, full test. No trip fee in San Diego County. Standalone lockout $105-$145.
EZ Car Keyz vs. San Diego Honda Dealer
Same OEM-grade transponder and same warranty. The catch is most San Diego Honda dealers no longer stock 1st-gen Insight blanks at all. We keep them on the truck.
Insight Problems We Fix in San Diego
1st-Gen ID46 Sync Loss
2000-2006 1st-gen Insights drop the ID46 trust handshake after 20-plus years. Dash lights, no crank. We read the ECU PIN, clone to a fresh ID46 chip, cut a new blade in your University Heights driveway. $250-$350 typical for the cut-clone-program job.
2nd-Gen Remote Head Wear
2010-2014 2nd-gen Insight remote-heads see button wear from owners using the lock button as a daily habit. The rubber dome cracks first, then the contact under it. We rebuild the housing on the truck or transfer the ID46 chip into a fresh shell.
3rd-Gen Smart Key Auth Hang
2019-2022 3rd-gen Insights drop the rolling-code trust chain after 12V events. Honda HDS server auth pairs the fob back to the immobilizer on the truck. Same workflow as any 2018-plus Civic given the shared platform.
Rolling Pwn Exposure (2019-2022)
The 3rd-gen 2019-2022 Insight sits inside the Honda 2012-2022 rolling-code advisory window. RFID-blocking pouches block the relay attack for $15-20 sitting on your nightstand. We can pair-test aftermarket immobilizer add-ons if the threat model warrants it.
Can You Program an Insight Key Yourself?
Sort of on 1st-2nd gen. Two-key procedure adds a third with two working keys. New key needs cut and chip programmed first.
No on 3rd-gen smart-key. Honda server auth required. No DIY path.

Insight Trivia
The 1st-gen Insight rolled into US showrooms for 2000 as the first hybrid sold in America, beating the Toyota Prius to market by a few months. Two seats, an aluminum body, and a 0.25 drag coefficient that nothing has matched in a production car since. From a locksmith chair the 1st-gen ran a standard Philips ID46 transponder the entire 2000-2006 run, which makes a clone job straightforward as long as the immobilizer data is still readable.
