I was out in Old Poway on a Tuesday afternoon, parked near the historic district, when a guy flagged me down. He worked a warehouse shift at a big box store nearby and had already been down this road once before with another locksmith.

He'd had a key made for his 2007 Fit about eight or nine days earlier. It started fine for a few mornings, then started acting strange by evening. I programmed a new remote head key with the correct transponder matched to his car, swapped a fresh CR1616 while I had it open, and walked every function: lock, unlock, the trunk release, and four cold starts back to back. Everything held.

He asked if the dealer could have caught this faster. Maybe. But they would have started by towing the car in, and he didn't have a spare key to drive it there. That alone would have cost him real money before anyone touched the ignition. He got it handled in his parking lot, same afternoon, for a fraction of what that route would have cost.

The key has been working since. No surprises after drive cycles. That is what a correct chip actually feels like.
