Over in Casa de Oro, a couple flagged me down from their street parking spot. They had just moved in together, bought a used 2014 Pilot a couple years back, and like a lot of people who buy used, they got the car with one key and never got around to making a second one.
That one key finally decided it was done. The blade snapped at the pivot - that spot where the plastic housing meets the metal - and the blade end went straight into the door lock cylinder. The fob housing was in one hand and the blade was stuck in the door. Zero working keys, nowhere to go.
The first thing I did was extract the broken blade from the lock cylinder without damaging the cylinder itself. Then I decoded the lock to get the cut code, which I needed to cut fresh keys anyway. The part that saved them was this: the transponder chip inside the cracked housing was completely intact. The plastic failed; the chip did not. I was able to read the chip data out of the broken fob, which meant I didn't have to run a full all-keys-lost procedure - no immobilizer reset, no timed sequence, no starting from zero.
I cut two new blades, transferred the chip into a new housing with a fresh CR1616 seated correctly, and verified both keys started the car and that every button on the fob was working. Standing on the sidewalk in Casa de Oro, start to finish, it took under 45 minutes.
They asked what the dealer would have charged. I told them to call and find out, but that whatever number they heard, I came in well under it. The real point I made was the spare: now they had two keys, and if one ever had a problem again, the other key existing changes the whole situation.
