Out in Blossom Valley, a guy had been wrestling with his 2004 CR-V ignition for a few weeks before he called me. Not a dead key, not a lost key. Just a stubborn one. What I found was worn internal wafers, the small flat pieces inside the lock that actually read the key cuts. I decoded the existing lock, replaced the worn wafers, and cut a fresh key matched to the repaired cylinder. Showed him the old wafers side by side so he could see the difference. He held them for a second and said something like, "that's it?"
That was it. The ignition turns smooth now. He kept every part that was actually working and replaced only what was worn. The dealer quote was for a whole new cylinder he did not need.
