He'd landed at the end of a red-eye and walked out to the economy lot moving on fumes. The 2023 CR-V sat right where he'd left it. He hit the door handle. Nothing. Hit it again. Still nothing.
Dead fob battery. Except he didn't know that yet. He tried the backup start method, holding the fob to the start button, and the car didn't respond to that either. So he figured something had gone wrong with the key itself, maybe the programming had dropped while the car sat unused for a week.

Fresh battery in, held the fob to the start button as a test. Car started immediately. That confirmed the fob itself was fine and still registered to the vehicle. I walked every function: door handles, lock button, the hatch release, the start button from a normal distance. Everything came back clean.
He didn't need reprogramming, a new key, or a dealer appointment. He needed a two-dollar battery and someone who'd come to the lot. He was in his car and on the freeway home before the dealer's service desk had even opened for the morning. Total was a fraction of what the tow alone would have cost him.
