A family staying over in the Brown Field Area had one key between them for their 2008 CR-V. That's how the week started, anyway.
Midway through their stay, the remote stopped responding. Doors wouldn't unlock from outside, the key-not-detected warning was flashing on the dash, and the only way in was the metal blade. They figured it was the battery. Swapped it at a convenience store, grabbed whatever coin cell fit the slot, and the remote came back for about half a day. Then nothing again.
They called the dealer. The dealer told them to tow it in and booked them for the following afternoon. The rental host knew a guy who knew a guy, and eventually my number got passed around. I pulled up to the driveway that evening.
First thing I checked was the replacement battery they'd bought. Wrong cell, wrong thickness, sitting loose in the contacts. That alone will cause intermittent fob failure on these, and it explained the half-day window where it worked. Swapped in the correct CR1616 and reseated it properly.
The remote came back. But while I had my programmer connected to verify transponder enrollment, I noticed the key had been partially de-synced, probably from repeated failed start attempts while the fob was acting up. Quick re-enrollment through the OBD port, tested lock, unlock, and ignition start, handed it back.
They didn't need a whole new key. They needed the right battery seated correctly and a sync check. Done in the driveway, same evening they called, for a fraction of what the dealer quoted, and without a tow or a lost day of vacation.
