A guy in Blossom Valley had been carrying two keys for months. One started the car but the remote buttons were dead. The other one, a replacement he bought off the internet, locked and unlocked just fine but the engine would crank and immediately stall.
He had been managing the situation by using both keys, one to operate the doors and one to drive. He called me because he wanted to get back down to a single working key and could not figure out why the online replacement never worked properly.
When I got there and looked at the situation, it became clear fast. The internet key had the remote paired to his car at some point, probably by whoever sold it, but the transponder had never been enrolled to his immobilizer. The car would crank because the starter responded to the key cylinder, but the engine cut out immediately because the security system never saw a valid transponder signal. That immediate stall pattern is the tell. It is not a mechanical problem. It is the immobilizer doing exactly what it is supposed to do.
His original key had the opposite issue. The transponder was fine, but the remote had given up, likely a cracked solder joint inside the fob from being dropped. The key blade itself was also worn enough that it was starting to feel loose in the ignition.
I decoded the original lock, cut a fresh blade to match, transferred what I needed, and ran the transponder enrollment on a properly sourced key. Tested the remote functions, tested the start, walked every button. Handed him one key that did everything.
He mentioned the dealer had quoted him a number he was not ready to pay just to sort out the replacement key situation. He paid a fraction of that and did not have to leave Blossom Valley.
