I got a call from a family staying at a rental out in De Luz. They were in Fallbrook for the week, one key for their 2005 Accord, and that morning the remote had stopped responding. The key still turned in the ignition, so they thought it was just the fob. They swapped the battery at a gas station, got the right size this time, and the remote came back for about two hours. Then nothing.

Then I cycled the ignition to confirm the transponder was still reading fine, because on these Accords the transponder and remote are in the same housing. If the fob is failing, you want to catch it before it takes the immobilizer registration with it.
Everything checked out. They didn't need a new key at all. Just the right diagnosis, done at the rental driveway, in about twenty minutes.
They'd already cleared their schedule for a dealer trip the next morning. I told them they could sleep in.
