2001 Acura NSX
Key Replacement - Save vs Dealer in San Diego

Q: How long does the key replacement actually take once you're at the car?

On a mechanical key job with a decodable lock and the right blank in hand, you are looking at well under an hour at the car. Decoding the lock, cutting the key, and testing it in the door and ignition is not a lengthy process when the equipment is already loaded in the van. The time that disappears with a dealer visit is everything surrounding the actual work: the drive there, the service write-up, the queue, the wait.

Q: Can you make a key faster than the dealer for a car this old?

Yes, and the gap is bigger on a car like the NSX than on a common model. Dealers that rarely see an NSX have to research the blank, potentially order it, and fit it into a tech's schedule. We come to you. The actual key cutting time does not change, but everything around it does. No tow required, no appointment backlog, no repair order paperwork eating your morning.

Q: My NSX key is worn down and starting to slip in the ignition. Can you cut a new one from the lock instead of copying the worn key?

Yes, and that is actually the better move. Copying a worn key just copies the wear. The cut gets slightly off, and over time that compounds. Decoding directly from the lock gives you the original cut specification, not a generation-removed copy of whatever the key has worn down to. On a car this age, the lock cylinder itself is usually still readable. If the cylinder is too worn to decode cleanly, there are other ways to establish the correct cut.

Q: The NSX has two lock cylinders, the door and the ignition. Will a key cut for one work in both?

On the 2001 NSX they should share the same key cut from the factory. If they don't match after years of service or prior lock work, that's worth knowing before we cut. I decode both if there's any doubt, so the replacement key works everywhere it's supposed to.

2001 Acura NSX Metal Key Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional

A guy in Casa de Oro reached out on a Friday afternoon. He had a 2001 NSX sitting in his driveway and one key, which had snapped at the bow. Not bent, not worn. Snapped clean. He still had both pieces, so at least the blade was intact.

He had already called the dealer. They told him to bring the car in. He pointed out that the key was broken. They said they could look into sourcing a replacement but couldn't give him a timeline over the phone.

I drove out that afternoon with my decoding tools. The cylinder was in good shape, which made life easier. I decoded the lock, confirmed the cut, sourced the right blank, and cut him a replacement key on site. He tested it in the door, tested it in the ignition, and it worked.

That was it. No tow, no appointment, no waiting room. The car stayed exactly where it was parked.

Acura NSX Mobile Service FAQ

Real costs, no dealer surprises

What if I need a key for my NSX after hours or on the weekend?▼

Dealer service departments for a car like this are not going to be helpful on a Saturday evening, and they are definitely not picking up on Sunday. The NSX is also not a car most dealers keep blank stock for on the shelf. If you lose your only key outside business hours, you are looking at waiting days rather than hours if you go the dealer route.
