2004 Acura NSX
Key Replacement - Save vs Dealer in San Diego

Q: How long does a mechanical key replacement take on site?

For a straight mechanical key like the one on the 2004 NSX, decoding the lock and cutting a replacement typically runs well under an hour once I am at the car. There is no programming sequence, no relearn timer, no module communication to wait on. It is a cutting job. The actual time at your vehicle is short. Most of the clock is me driving to you, not the work itself.

Q: Can you make a key faster than the dealer for a 2004 NSX?

Yes, by a significant margin, and for a different reason than people usually expect. It is not that I have faster equipment. It is that the dealer workflow adds a lot of time that has nothing to do with cutting a key: the appointment queue, the service writer, the parts check, the tech availability. On a vehicle this age and this rare in daily service rotation, a dealer may also need to source a key blank before anything gets cut.

Q: I only have one key for my 2004 NSX. Should I get a spare cut now or wait until I need one?

Get the spare now. The 2004 NSX is not a car you see at every locksmith, and the key blank for it is not something every shop keeps on the shelf. If you lose your only key, you are looking at a longer wait while someone sources the right blank, and possibly a tow if the car is somewhere inconvenient. A spare cut while you still have the original is the easiest version of this job.

Q: My 2004 NSX key is worn down and starting to slip in the ignition. Can a worn key be used to cut a replacement?

A worn key complicates a direct copy. If the cuts are too shallow or the tip is rounded off from years of use, copying it directly just reproduces the wear. The right move is decoding the lock cylinder itself rather than tracing the damaged key. That gives me the original factory cut depth, and the replacement comes out correct instead of inheriting whatever the old key lost over the years.

2004 Acura NSX Metal Key Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional

A guy came through Downtown National City on a weekend trip. He had driven down from out of the area and somewhere between parking and walking back, his key was gone. Not a spare situation either. Just the one key, and now it was wherever keys go when they disappear.

He had already called an Acura dealer. They told him to have the car towed in, that it would need to be looked at Monday during regular service hours, and that parts availability on a 2004 NSX was something they would have to check. He said the word "towed" like it had personally insulted him.

I met him on the street near where he parked. The job was a mechanical key replacement, which means I decode the lock and cut a replacement blade to match. No module, no programming sequence, no waiting on a system handshake. I worked the door lock, got the cut, and made a key that worked the door and the ignition.

He drove himself home. No tow. No Monday appointment. No parts-availability conversation with a service advisor who has never actually seen one of these cars in person.

The dealer route wasn't wrong, exactly. It just wasn't necessary.

Acura NSX Mobile Service FAQ

Real costs, no dealer surprises

What if I need a key for my NSX after hours or on a weekend?▼

This is exactly where a mobile locksmith makes sense. Dealer service departments keep weekday hours and booking a key job on a Saturday or Sunday usually means waiting until the following week. The 2004 NSX uses a mechanical key, so the replacement is a cutting job that does not require dealer equipment. I work weekends and can come to you in Downtown National City or wherever the car is sitting. The car does not need to move.
