Out near the Grossmont Area in La Mesa, I got a call from a personal trainer who was stuck in a gym parking lot with a problem that had been building for a while.
He bought his 2011 Acura TSX used a couple years back with one key. Always meant to get a spare cut, never did. That morning, the flip housing gave out. The plastic shell cracked clean through, and when he tried to use the emergency blade to get into the door manually, the blade snapped at the pivot point. He was standing in the lot holding the fob in two pieces with the car locked in front of him.
I decoded the door lock with my Lishi tool to get him inside first. Once we were in, I looked at the broken fob. The housing was done, the blade was done, but the circuit board inside was intact and the transponder chip was still readable. That mattered. Because his was the only key, I had two paths: read the existing chip data and rebuild into a new housing with fresh electronics, or do a full all-keys-lost reset. The chip being good meant we could take the faster road.
I transferred the salvageable data, fitted a new blade, rehoused everything, and tested all four buttons plus ignition start before I packed up. Total time was around 40 minutes.
He asked about the dealer at the end, almost as an afterthought. I told him what they typically run on these. He just nodded and moved on. He had a working key and a backup in his hand. That was enough.
If your fob housing is cracked or the blade is gone, don't toss the whole thing. Bring the pieces. The part that actually talks to your car is usually still fine.
