2004 Acura TSX
Key Replacement - Save vs Dealer in San Diego

Q: How long does the programming take once you are at my car?

On a 2004 TSX with at least one working key, adding a second key is a relatively quick job. If you still have a working key, the process goes faster. All-keys-lost takes a bit longer because the immobilizer has to be handled differently with no registered key present to reference. Either way, this is a driveway job, not an all-morning dealership visit. No appointment queue, no service writer, no waiting for a tech to free up between other cars.

Q: Can you get a key made faster than the dealer?

The actual programming time does not change based on who does it. What changes is everything around it. At a dealer, you are booking an appointment, arranging transport if the car does not drive, waiting in a queue behind other repair orders, and then waiting again while parts and a certified tech line up. We come to you in Lakeside, work at your car, and skip all of that overhead.

Q: I bought a replacement transponder key blank online. Can I program it myself?

The 2004 TSX does not have a driver-seat relearn sequence or an ignition-cycling trick for transponder programming. There is no onboard add-a-key procedure you can do without equipment. The transponder chip in the key head has to be registered to the immobilizer using a programmer connected to the vehicle. So if you bought a blank online, the key still needs to come to someone with the right tools before it will do anything other than crank and stall.

Q: My 2004 TSX cranks but dies instantly every time. Could this actually be the immobilizer and not a mechanical problem?

Yes, and it is one of the more common misdiagnoses on these cars. A crank-and-immediately-stall on a 2004 TSX points directly at the immobilizer not seeing a valid key. The engine management system cuts fuel almost instantly when it does not get the right signal from the transponder. If the car cranks fine, the battery is good, and it just refuses to stay running, rule out the key before spending anything on fuel or ignition components.

2004 Acura TSX Transponder Key Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional

Out in Blossom Valley, I got a call from a guy who had been troubleshooting his 2004 TSX for three days thinking it was a fuel pump issue. Car would crank, fire for a second, then die. He had already called a shop, they quoted him a fuel pump, and he was about a hundred dollars of parts purchases away from tearing into the wrong end of the car.

I asked him one question before I drove out: did this start right after you got a new key made? He went quiet for a second. Then said yeah, actually, his wife had a copy cut at a hardware store a few months back and he had been using that one lately because he could not find his original.

That was it. The hardware-store key was cut correctly, fit the lock cylinder fine, and turned the ignition without any trouble. But it had no transponder chip in the head. The immobilizer saw nothing, fired the engine for a fraction of a second, and shut it back down. Classic.

I drove out to his driveway in Lakeside, confirmed the original key still started the car normally, and cut and programmed a proper replacement key with the correct transponder. His original was getting worn anyway, so we did two while I was there.

He had nearly paid for a fuel pump diagnosis and parts on a car that had nothing wrong with it. The key was the whole story from the beginning.

Acura TSX Mobile Service FAQ

Real costs, no dealer surprises

What if I need an Acura key after hours or on the weekend?▼

Dealer service departments for a 2004-era Acura typically close by 5 or 6 PM and are not open Sundays. If you lose your only key on a Saturday night or get stranded after hours, you are looking at a tow and then a wait until Monday morning at minimum. We work outside dealer hours, so if you are stuck in Lakeside on a weekend, you are not sitting in a parking lot until the week starts.
