When a 2017 Ram 1500 key is done wrong, it doesn't "kind of work." It fails. The engine might crank but not turn over. The Fobik might twist in the WIN module but the immobilizer kills fuel after two seconds. Push-to-start might detect the fob one morning then refuse the next.
A traveling nurse at the coin laundry in Alpine had a key from another locksmith for her 1500 that stopped working after about ten days. It would start in the morning, then by evening push-to-start would flash "key not detected." She thought the truck had an electrical issue, but it didn't.
The previous locksmith had used a generic aftermarket fob that was close but not spec. On Ram's RF-hub, a mismatch can pass initial pairing but fail after deeper security checks. I used my VVDI2 to read the chip data in her bad fob, confirmed the frequency was off, and programmed a correct replacement. Her fob, FCC ID GQ4-53T, was a 5-button smart key.
The replacement has been working since. Her cost was $185. Dealer would have charged $395.
