I got a call on a Saturday afternoon from a guy parked at one of the little league fields off Central Avenue in Bonita. He had driven out for his kid's game, left the fob on the seat while he watched from the fence, and came back to a truck that would not acknowledge the fob at all. No unlock when he grabbed the handle, no response to any button. The dash showed a key-not-detected warning when he finally got in with the mechanical backup key tucked inside the fob.
He thought he needed a whole new fob programmed. That is usually where the story goes sideways cost-wise.
I pulled up, popped the fob open right on the hood of my van. The CR2032 inside looked fine but was sitting at an angle, barely making contact with one terminal. Somebody had opened it before, probably to replace the battery, and had not fully snapped the shell back together. The cell was rocking loose every time the fob got jostled.
Seated the battery correctly, snapped the housing back flush, and handed it back. Truck woke right up.
The part that surprised him was what came next. I did not just say good luck and pack up. I walked the perimeter of that truck. Tested the door handles, ran every button on the fob, checked the range from a solid distance out toward the field, and did three consecutive starts. When everything checked out clean, then we were done.
He had already mentally budgeted for a full replacement. Walking away without that bill was the better Saturday surprise.
